Haldia port is 120 kilometers away from Kolkata.</p> <p>Sharma said they have been forced to look for alternatives as the officials of Kolkata Port Trust have turned a deaf ear to their grievances.</p> <p>Kolkata is the nearest seaport from Nepal. It is 704 km from Birgunj. However, immediate past chairman of BICCI Pradeep Kumar Kedia said that Haldia would be a suitable alternative to Kolkata even though it is a little far away.</p> <p>According to Kedia, Birgunj Dry Port has been facing lots of problems due to the negligence of Indian Railwlays while importing goods from Kolkata.</p> <p>Meanwhile, Haldia Dock Complex Chairman G Senthilvel assured to provide quality service to Nepali importers at Haldia Port. Mega Bank’s Chairman Bhoj Bahadur Shah made such announcement during the seventh anniversary of the bank held at its central office in Kamaladi on July 22.</p> <p>Shah informed that the provincial headquarters of the bank has already been initiated from Butwal in Province 5. He further announced that the bank is in the process of merger with Tourism Development Bank and claimed that Mega Bank will become one of the banks with highest capital after the merger.</p> <p>“The merger with Tourism Development Bank will get completed within this fiscal year,” said Shah.</p> <p>Mega Bank’s CEO Anil Keshari Shah informed that the bank plans open 20 new branches in the next fiscal year. Stating that the recent local level elections have opened new doors of economic potential, CEO Shah said that the bank will capitalize on it by expanding its branches in the new municipalities and rural municipalities.</p> <p>He further informed that the bank has already initiated the process to issue 65 percent rights shares to its shareholders. According to him, around 20 million units of shares each worth Rs 100 will be issued to the shareholders.</p> <p>CEO Shah also shed light of the bank assurance plan in coordination with Nepal Life Insurance Company and other insurance companies in the near future.</p> <p>In the last fiscal year, the bank’s deposit collection rose by Rs 8 billion to a total of Rs 39 billion while its loan flow has also increased by Rs 7.4 billion. The decision of the Indian Railways to allocate less number of racks for goods being imported from India and third countries have left the Nepali business community worried.</p> <p>Madhav Rajpal, secretary at the Birgunj chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said that the Nepali importers have been facing problem of importing raw materials and other goods due to the reduction in number of racks.</p> <p>Indian Railways, on the other hand, says that it took such measure since lots of goods have already piled up in Raxaul causing congestion. </p> <p>“The local businessmen in and around Birgunj depend on the raw materials imported from this customs point. Our production has been hampered after the Indian Railways denied racks for us,” said Rajpal.</p> <p>The import of daily essentials has also been affected, according to the importers.</p> <p>Recently, the Indian Railways had imposed fines up to six times the normal amount for unloading goods in a bid to ease the congestion.
