However, the central bank has shown some flexibility regarding this issue.</p> <p>Only five commercial banks have fulfilled the requirement of Rs 8 billion paid-up capital as of now. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p> <p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p> <p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p> <p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p> <p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p> <p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p> <p>NRB’s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p> <p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p> <p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p> <p>“The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn’t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p> <p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p> <p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p> <p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p> <p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p> <p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p> <p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. </p> <p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p> <p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p> <p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. With the tourism business in distress, hotel entrepreneurs in Pokhara started promotional campaigns to revive the business.</p> <p>Hotel entrepreneurs formed Pokhara Tourism Revival Committee (PTRC), which was active in relief distribution and tourism promotion for one year post earthquake. The committee spread the message worldwide that Pokhara is now safe. Former chairman of Pokhara Tourism Council Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai took such initiative to revive the industry.</p> <p>The committee has been dissolved after meeting its objective but the private sector is still actively promoting tourism campaigns as before.</p> <p>An umbrella organization constituting Pokhara Tourism Council, Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association and NATTA Western Regional Chapter has been promoting tourism in neighbouring countries.</p> <p>A team of the council reached Darjeeling, Sikim and Siliguri in India this year as well as in the previous year for the promotional activities. This campaign will contribute to increase the number of tourist, claims Gautam.</p> <p>“Chaliya Pokhara” campaign initiated by Western Region Hotel Entrepreneurs Association has also successfully contributed in increasing the number of tourist in Nepal. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p> <p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p> <p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p> <p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p> <p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p> <p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p> <p>NRB’s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p> <p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p> <p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p> <p>“The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p> <p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p> <p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. </p> <p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p> <p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. Four commercial banks made the announcement well ahead of the deadline. Those banks meeting the criteria set by the central bank within mid-June are Rastriya Banijya Bank, Agriculture Development Bank, Nepal Investment Bank and Global IME Bank. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p> <p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p> <p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p> <p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p> <p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p> <p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p> <p>NRB’s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p> <p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p> <p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p> <p>“The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. The amount was released after a long wait but the victims couldn’t fully benefit from it as the government decided to distribute the relief amount in installments.</p> <p>As per the government decision, 3,248 victims of Bardiya and 612 victims of Banke received the first installment worth Rs 50,000 per family, according to engineer Homnath Bhusal of the Urban Development and Building Division Office which distributed the amount.</p> <p>The government had spent around Rs 193 million in the first installment.</p> <p>Officials at the urban development office say that they failed to distribute the amount since the government released a large sum unexpectedly and they had trouble in facilitating banking process. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p> <p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p> <p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p> <p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. </p> <p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p> <p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p> <p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion. Another commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited, fulfilled the requirement on the eve of the new fiscal year.</p> <p>Other banks have pledged to fulfill the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares while some banks have said they have been able to meet only half of the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>Records maintained by NRB show that the commercial banks which have so far failed to meet the ceiling set by NRB have paid-up-capital between Rs 4 billion to Rs 6 billion.</p> <p>Likewise, national level development banks also have not been able to meet the paid-up capital requirement of Rs 2.5 billion set by the central bank. The ceiling for district level development banks has been set at Rs 1.5 billion.</p> <p>Of late, most of the banks have been busy in merger and acquisition to meet the paid-up capital while some have made commitment to meet the requirement by issuing rights shares and bonus shares.</p> <p>Garima Bikas Bank, Kailash Bikash Bank and Lumbini Bikas Bank have almost met the paid-up capital requirement.</p> <p>NRB has said that the banks which have already started the process of meeting the paid-up capital will not be punished until the final audit report is prepared.</p> <p>NRB had issued a warning a few weeks ago that it would take action against banks and financial institutions (BFIs) if they fail to meet the paid-up capital requirement by mid-July.</p> <p>NRB’s Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Poudel had said the central bank would put a hold on cash dividends, bonus distribution, deposits, loan ceiling and opening of new branches of those BFIs which do not comply with its directives.</p> <p>NRB had brought a new monetary policy two years ago under which all commercial banks were asked to increase the minimum paid-up capital from Rs 2 billion to Rs 8 billion by mid-July 2017.</p> <p>However, Poudel has now softened his stance.</p> <p>“The BFIs Act 2073 has provision for final audit six months after the end of a fiscal year. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) made such announcement on July 18 while unveiling a report on economic and financial status of Nepal in 11 months of FY 2016/17. In the corresponding period of the previous FY, the current account surplus of Nepal was Rs 130 billion. According to the report, sharp rise in import of goods resulted in the deficit last year.</p> <p>During the review period, net services income registered a surplus. This has led to Rs 74.26 billion in surplus in the overall balance of payment (BoP) of the country. However, the BoP in the corresponding period of the previous year was Rs 171 billion in surplus.</p> <p>The BoP remained in surplus during the last fiscal year due to capital transfer of Rs 12.23 billion and direct foreign investment of Rs 12.27 billion, according to NRB.</p> <p>The current account was in deficit from the start of the last fiscal year but saw some improvement in the last three months. The current account deficit started gradually declining since mid-April. </p> <p>According to NRB, the decline in current account deficit owes much to the income generated by the tourism industry. During that period, the income from tourism industry increased by 41.8 percent as compared to the previous year. The income from tourism sector was Rs 55.2 billion.</p> <p>In the first 11 months of FY 2016/17, the export of goods increased by 10.4 percent for a total sale of Rs 68.62 billion. In the previous year, the export dropped by 20.1 percent.</p> <p>Meanwhile, the total import increased by 30.9 percent in the review period for a total import of Rs 896.57 billion.
