	January 16: Sankhu, an ancient town in north-eastern part of Kathmandu, has witnessed decline in the number of tourists due to the poor condition of road along the Chahabil-Sankhu road section, according to RastriyaSamacharSamiti (RSS).&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The 11.46 km-road section which leads to various destinations such as Nagarkot, tea estate at Bhotechaur in Sindhupalchowkpopularly known as &#39;Mini Ilam&#39;, picnic spot JarsinghPauwa and Jhule among other tourist spots, has long been in a sorry state.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Paragliding pilot at Shankharapur, Ajay Chaulagain, said, &quot;The road here is in such a poor condition that tourists are facing problems to reach here due to potholes, dust and mud on the road.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	According to him, tourists coming to Shankharapur for paragliding express their annoyance due to this.</p>
<p>
	&quot;Road is the prime reason for boosting or backing tourism. The tourists who want to enjoy paragliding while gazing at the mountains opt for other alternatives due to the poor road here,&quot; &nbsp;RSS quoted Chaulagain as saying.</p>
<p>
	The 8-meter wide road section which is undergoing expansion to 22 metres has been left unmanaged although the expansion ought to be completed by December last year. Sand and aggregates lie alongside the road. During the monsoon, the road section is muddy while it is full of dust in summer and winter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Moreover, the travel agencies have been sending their tourists who want to visit JarsinghPauwa for paragliding or sightseeing elsewhere.</p>
<p>
	Ram Prasad Timalsina, proprietor of Hotel Heaven Hill, shared, &quot;The vehicles used for tourists get stuck in the middle of the road due to potholes. Traveling in two-wheelers is perilous.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	He further bemoaned that in lack of timely maintenance of this road section, tourism sector has suffered a setback.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Hotelier Timalsina complained that frequent call attention to the road construction company and the government bodies on the issue have gone unheeded. RSS reported that the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road is in a very sorry state for the last three years. The condition of the Jorpati-Sundarijal road is also very bad.&nbsp;People living in settlements alongside the road and commuters are irritated by the thick dust that issues when vehicles ply on the road. So are the roadside vendors. People are bearing the brunt due to such condition of the road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	&ldquo;One cannot see the road due to the dust when it is dry. The innumerable potholes and ditches in the road make driving risky and challenging. The condition gets worse when it rains,&rdquo; explained Dev Narayan Chaulagain of Narayantar, Jorpati.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The BouddhanathStupa, a world heritage site is located close to this road. The religious site Sankhu also lies along this road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Three years ago the government brought a plan of upgrading the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road into 22 metres wide four-lane road from Chabahil, according to RSS. The Kathmandu Valley Road Extension Project called for tenders in May 2015 for the construction of this road. It awarded the contract to four construction companies four months later. The project has given the responsibility of road expansion to an additional company after it seemed the four companies appointed earlier would not be able to complete the works on time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Project information officer BishwaBijayaLal Shrestha said that the Supreme Court has recently issued an order to provide compensation to the people whose land has been acquired for the road expansion.&nbsp;<br />
	Shrestha clarified that the works have been delayed also due to the compensation process. &ldquo;Road expansion works are progressing ahead smoothly except at places where there is dispute over the land. The work would be completed soon,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>According to the organiser, students of the school made donations for the cause. The club collected non-perishable food items like rice, pulses, flour, oil, sugar, biscuits, cookies, noodles, beaten rice, beans, spices/dry fruits from the teachers, staffers and students .</p>

<p>The foods items collected from the programme will be handed to Mary Ward School, Jhamsikhel; Mary Ward School, Lubhu; Horac&nbsp; Nepal, Patan; Rotary Club of Pashupati, Kathmandu; Rejina Amiros School, Dhobighat; Navajyoti Center, Baluwatar; Kithsa Nepal, Kathmandu; and NRN Madhu, Kathmandu.</p>

<p>The school said its Social Service Club has been is organizing this type of large scale donation programme every two years.</p>

<p>&nbsp;The children have also been collecting stationary items for the underprivileged children and warm clothes to the needy in the winter season in different parts of Nepal. The Souper Bowl food donation programme was started by the club since the inception of the school with the sole motive to inculcate sharing and caring culture in the community. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Issuing a statement, the stakeholders said that the campaign is being organised with the objective to discourage touching, pressing, staring and teasing in city buses, country buses, night buses, mini/microbuses and three-wheeler tempos.</p>

<p>Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Tham Maya Thapa inaugurated the campaign on the premises of Sajha Yatayat in Lalitpur amid a function. The 16 days of the campaign (November &nbsp;25 &ndash;December 10) represent the period designated by the United Nations for activism against gender-based violence, reads the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The present campaign is an effort by several social organisations and committed individuals to reduce the level of harassment faced by riders, particularly women, in public conveyances. Nepal Traffic Police, Zonta Club-Nepal, Sabah-Nepal and Sajha Yatayat are the organisations backing in the campaign,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p>The campaign includes messages on banners and stickers developed to empower women when they face harassment in public vehicles, encouraging them to confront the perpetrators, inform fellow passengers, report to the conductor, and/or call the hotline of the Women&rsquo;s Commission at 1145. The campaign also seeks to educate passengers to become aware of acts of sexual violence happening around them and to speak up and intervene.</p>

<p>Chandni Joshi, former South Asia head of UNIFEM who is a part of the campaign, says, &ldquo;With women venturing into crowded public spaces ever more than before, it is appropriate to have a focus on public transport, which is a prime area of harassment. The 16 days of activism is a start of what we hope will be a continuous campaign throughout the coming year.&rdquo;</p>

<p>President of Zonta Club-Nepal Meera Jyoti says, &ldquo;We are hopeful that the message from this campaign will permeate society as a whole so that sexual violence everywhere is reduced and not just in public vehicles.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Panta, chief of Nepal&rsquo;s traffic police force, says that his force is highly sensitive to the harassment of women in crowded buses, and was happy to support the citizen&rsquo;s effort to ensure the security of riders of public transport.</p>

<p>Kanak Mani Dixit, chair of Sajha Yatayat, says, &ldquo;Though we are starting the campaign with Sajha Yatayat, we are hopeful that activists and volunteers all over the country will join in a long-term campaign to end sexual harassment in public transport and in public places.&rdquo;</p>

	January 16: Sankhu, an ancient town in north-eastern part of Kathmandu, has witnessed decline in the number of tourists due to the poor condition of road along the Chahabil-Sankhu road section, according to RastriyaSamacharSamiti (RSS).&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The 11.46 km-road section which leads to various destinations such as Nagarkot, tea estate at Bhotechaur in Sindhupalchowkpopularly known as &#39;Mini Ilam&#39;, picnic spot JarsinghPauwa and Jhule among other tourist spots, has long been in a sorry state.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Paragliding pilot at Shankharapur, Ajay Chaulagain, said, &quot;The road here is in such a poor condition that tourists are facing problems to reach here due to potholes, dust and mud on the road.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	According to him, tourists coming to Shankharapur for paragliding express their annoyance due to this.</p>
<p>
	&quot;Road is the prime reason for boosting or backing tourism. The tourists who want to enjoy paragliding while gazing at the mountains opt for other alternatives due to the poor road here,&quot; &nbsp;RSS quoted Chaulagain as saying.</p>
<p>
	The 8-meter wide road section which is undergoing expansion to 22 metres has been left unmanaged although the expansion ought to be completed by December last year. Sand and aggregates lie alongside the road. During the monsoon, the road section is muddy while it is full of dust in summer and winter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Moreover, the travel agencies have been sending their tourists who want to visit JarsinghPauwa for paragliding or sightseeing elsewhere.</p>
<p>
	Ram Prasad Timalsina, proprietor of Hotel Heaven Hill, shared, &quot;The vehicles used for tourists get stuck in the middle of the road due to potholes. Traveling in two-wheelers is perilous.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	He further bemoaned that in lack of timely maintenance of this road section, tourism sector has suffered a setback.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Hotelier Timalsina complained that frequent call attention to the road construction company and the government bodies on the issue have gone unheeded. RSS reported that the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road is in a very sorry state for the last three years. The condition of the Jorpati-Sundarijal road is also very bad.&nbsp;People living in settlements alongside the road and commuters are irritated by the thick dust that issues when vehicles ply on the road. So are the roadside vendors. People are bearing the brunt due to such condition of the road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	&ldquo;One cannot see the road due to the dust when it is dry. The innumerable potholes and ditches in the road make driving risky and challenging. The condition gets worse when it rains,&rdquo; explained Dev Narayan Chaulagain of Narayantar, Jorpati.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The BouddhanathStupa, a world heritage site is located close to this road. The religious site Sankhu also lies along this road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Three years ago the government brought a plan of upgrading the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road into 22 metres wide four-lane road from Chabahil, according to RSS. The Kathmandu Valley Road Extension Project called for tenders in May 2015 for the construction of this road. It awarded the contract to four construction companies four months later. The project has given the responsibility of road expansion to an additional company after it seemed the four companies appointed earlier would not be able to complete the works on time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Project information officer BishwaBijayaLal Shrestha said that the Supreme Court has recently issued an order to provide compensation to the people whose land has been acquired for the road expansion.&nbsp;<br />
	Shrestha clarified that the works have been delayed also due to the compensation process. &ldquo;Road expansion works are progressing ahead smoothly except at places where there is dispute over the land. The work would be completed soon,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>&nbsp;The children have also been collecting stationary items for the underprivileged children and warm clothes to the needy in the winter season in different parts of Nepal. Issuing a statement, the stakeholders said that the campaign is being organised with the objective to discourage touching, pressing, staring and teasing in city buses, country buses, night buses, mini/microbuses and three-wheeler tempos.</p>

<p>Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Tham Maya Thapa inaugurated the campaign on the premises of Sajha Yatayat in Lalitpur amid a function. The 16 days of the campaign (November &nbsp;25 &ndash;December 10) represent the period designated by the United Nations for activism against gender-based violence, reads the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The present campaign is an effort by several social organisations and committed individuals to reduce the level of harassment faced by riders, particularly women, in public conveyances. Nepal Traffic Police, Zonta Club-Nepal, Sabah-Nepal and Sajha Yatayat are the organisations backing in the campaign,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p>The campaign includes messages on banners and stickers developed to empower women when they face harassment in public vehicles, encouraging them to confront the perpetrators, inform fellow passengers, report to the conductor, and/or call the hotline of the Women&rsquo;s Commission at 1145. The campaign also seeks to educate passengers to become aware of acts of sexual violence happening around them and to speak up and intervene.</p>

<p>Chandni Joshi, former South Asia head of UNIFEM who is a part of the campaign, says, &ldquo;With women venturing into crowded public spaces ever more than before, it is appropriate to have a focus on public transport, which is a prime area of harassment. The 16 days of activism is a start of what we hope will be a continuous campaign throughout the coming year.&rdquo;</p>

<p>President of Zonta Club-Nepal Meera Jyoti says, &ldquo;We are hopeful that the message from this campaign will permeate society as a whole so that sexual violence everywhere is reduced and not just in public vehicles.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Panta, chief of Nepal&rsquo;s traffic police force, says that his force is highly sensitive to the harassment of women in crowded buses, and was happy to support the citizen&rsquo;s effort to ensure the security of riders of public transport.</p>

<p>Kanak Mani Dixit, chair of Sajha Yatayat, says, &ldquo;Though we are starting the campaign with Sajha Yatayat, we are hopeful that activists and volunteers all over the country will join in a long-term campaign to end sexual harassment in public transport and in public places.&rdquo;</p>

	January 16: Sankhu, an ancient town in north-eastern part of Kathmandu, has witnessed decline in the number of tourists due to the poor condition of road along the Chahabil-Sankhu road section, according to RastriyaSamacharSamiti (RSS).&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The 11.46 km-road section which leads to various destinations such as Nagarkot, tea estate at Bhotechaur in Sindhupalchowkpopularly known as &#39;Mini Ilam&#39;, picnic spot JarsinghPauwa and Jhule among other tourist spots, has long been in a sorry state.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Paragliding pilot at Shankharapur, Ajay Chaulagain, said, &quot;The road here is in such a poor condition that tourists are facing problems to reach here due to potholes, dust and mud on the road.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	According to him, tourists coming to Shankharapur for paragliding express their annoyance due to this.</p>
<p>
	&quot;Road is the prime reason for boosting or backing tourism. The tourists who want to enjoy paragliding while gazing at the mountains opt for other alternatives due to the poor road here,&quot; &nbsp;RSS quoted Chaulagain as saying.</p>
<p>
	The 8-meter wide road section which is undergoing expansion to 22 metres has been left unmanaged although the expansion ought to be completed by December last year. Sand and aggregates lie alongside the road. During the monsoon, the road section is muddy while it is full of dust in summer and winter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Moreover, the travel agencies have been sending their tourists who want to visit JarsinghPauwa for paragliding or sightseeing elsewhere.</p>
<p>
	Ram Prasad Timalsina, proprietor of Hotel Heaven Hill, shared, &quot;The vehicles used for tourists get stuck in the middle of the road due to potholes. Traveling in two-wheelers is perilous.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	He further bemoaned that in lack of timely maintenance of this road section, tourism sector has suffered a setback.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Hotelier Timalsina complained that frequent call attention to the road construction company and the government bodies on the issue have gone unheeded. RSS reported that the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road is in a very sorry state for the last three years. The condition of the Jorpati-Sundarijal road is also very bad.&nbsp;People living in settlements alongside the road and commuters are irritated by the thick dust that issues when vehicles ply on the road. So are the roadside vendors. People are bearing the brunt due to such condition of the road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	&ldquo;One cannot see the road due to the dust when it is dry. The innumerable potholes and ditches in the road make driving risky and challenging. The condition gets worse when it rains,&rdquo; explained Dev Narayan Chaulagain of Narayantar, Jorpati.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The BouddhanathStupa, a world heritage site is located close to this road. The religious site Sankhu also lies along this road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Three years ago the government brought a plan of upgrading the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road into 22 metres wide four-lane road from Chabahil, according to RSS. The Kathmandu Valley Road Extension Project called for tenders in May 2015 for the construction of this road. It awarded the contract to four construction companies four months later. The project has given the responsibility of road expansion to an additional company after it seemed the four companies appointed earlier would not be able to complete the works on time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Project information officer BishwaBijayaLal Shrestha said that the Supreme Court has recently issued an order to provide compensation to the people whose land has been acquired for the road expansion.&nbsp;<br />
	Shrestha clarified that the works have been delayed also due to the compensation process. &ldquo;Road expansion works are progressing ahead smoothly except at places where there is dispute over the land. The work would be completed soon,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>The school said its Social Service Club has been is organizing this type of large scale donation programme every two years.</p>

<p>&nbsp;The children have also been collecting stationary items for the underprivileged children and warm clothes to the needy in the winter season in different parts of Nepal. The Souper Bowl food donation programme was started by the club since the inception of the school with the sole motive to inculcate sharing and caring culture in the community. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>On a lighter note, Toastmaster members also showcased their talent on stage. First ventriloquist of Nepal, renowned stand up comic Toastmaster Seema Golchha showcased her special act on the day. Other talented toastmasters also showcased their special talents to the audience.</p>

<p>Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Tham Maya Thapa inaugurated the campaign on the premises of Sajha Yatayat in Lalitpur amid a function. The 16 days of the campaign (November &nbsp;25 &ndash;December 10) represent the period designated by the United Nations for activism against gender-based violence, reads the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The present campaign is an effort by several social organisations and committed individuals to reduce the level of harassment faced by riders, particularly women, in public conveyances. Nepal Traffic Police, Zonta Club-Nepal, Sabah-Nepal and Sajha Yatayat are the organisations backing in the campaign,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p>The campaign includes messages on banners and stickers developed to empower women when they face harassment in public vehicles, encouraging them to confront the perpetrators, inform fellow passengers, report to the conductor, and/or call the hotline of the Women&rsquo;s Commission at 1145. The campaign also seeks to educate passengers to become aware of acts of sexual violence happening around them and to speak up and intervene.</p>

<p>Chandni Joshi, former South Asia head of UNIFEM who is a part of the campaign, says, &ldquo;With women venturing into crowded public spaces ever more than before, it is appropriate to have a focus on public transport, which is a prime area of harassment. The 16 days of activism is a start of what we hope will be a continuous campaign throughout the coming year.&rdquo;</p>

<p>President of Zonta Club-Nepal Meera Jyoti says, &ldquo;We are hopeful that the message from this campaign will permeate society as a whole so that sexual violence everywhere is reduced and not just in public vehicles.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Panta, chief of Nepal&rsquo;s traffic police force, says that his force is highly sensitive to the harassment of women in crowded buses, and was happy to support the citizen&rsquo;s effort to ensure the security of riders of public transport.</p>

<p>Kanak Mani Dixit, chair of Sajha Yatayat, says, &ldquo;Though we are starting the campaign with Sajha Yatayat, we are hopeful that activists and volunteers all over the country will join in a long-term campaign to end sexual harassment in public transport and in public places.&rdquo;</p>

	According to him, tourists coming to Shankharapur for paragliding express their annoyance due to this.</p>

	&quot;Road is the prime reason for boosting or backing tourism. The tourists who want to enjoy paragliding while gazing at the mountains opt for other alternatives due to the poor road here,&quot; &nbsp;RSS quoted Chaulagain as saying.</p>

	The 8-meter wide road section which is undergoing expansion to 22 metres has been left unmanaged although the expansion ought to be completed by December last year. Sand and aggregates lie alongside the road. During the monsoon, the road section is muddy while it is full of dust in summer and winter.&nbsp;</p>

	Moreover, the travel agencies have been sending their tourists who want to visit JarsinghPauwa for paragliding or sightseeing elsewhere.</p>

	Ram Prasad Timalsina, proprietor of Hotel Heaven Hill, shared, &quot;The vehicles used for tourists get stuck in the middle of the road due to potholes. Traveling in two-wheelers is perilous.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
	He further bemoaned that in lack of timely maintenance of this road section, tourism sector has suffered a setback.&nbsp;</p>

	Hotelier Timalsina complained that frequent call attention to the road construction company and the government bodies on the issue have gone unheeded. RSS reported that the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road is in a very sorry state for the last three years. The condition of the Jorpati-Sundarijal road is also very bad.&nbsp;People living in settlements alongside the road and commuters are irritated by the thick dust that issues when vehicles ply on the road. So are the roadside vendors. People are bearing the brunt due to such condition of the road.&nbsp;</p>

	&ldquo;One cannot see the road due to the dust when it is dry. The innumerable potholes and ditches in the road make driving risky and challenging. The condition gets worse when it rains,&rdquo; explained Dev Narayan Chaulagain of Narayantar, Jorpati.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	The BouddhanathStupa, a world heritage site is located close to this road. The religious site Sankhu also lies along this road.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Three years ago the government brought a plan of upgrading the Bouddha-Jorpati-Sankhu road into 22 metres wide four-lane road from Chabahil, according to RSS. The Kathmandu Valley Road Extension Project called for tenders in May 2015 for the construction of this road. It awarded the contract to four construction companies four months later. The project has given the responsibility of road expansion to an additional company after it seemed the four companies appointed earlier would not be able to complete the works on time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	Project information officer BishwaBijayaLal Shrestha said that the Supreme Court has recently issued an order to provide compensation to the people whose land has been acquired for the road expansion.&nbsp;<br />
	Shrestha clarified that the works have been delayed also due to the compensation process. &ldquo;Road expansion works are progressing ahead smoothly except at places where there is dispute over the land. The work would be completed soon,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p>Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Tham Maya Thapa inaugurated the campaign on the premises of Sajha Yatayat in Lalitpur amid a function. The 16 days of the campaign (November &nbsp;25 &ndash;December 10) represent the period designated by the United Nations for activism against gender-based violence, reads the statement.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The present campaign is an effort by several social organisations and committed individuals to reduce the level of harassment faced by riders, particularly women, in public conveyances. Nepal Traffic Police, Zonta Club-Nepal, Sabah-Nepal and Sajha Yatayat are the organisations backing in the campaign,&rdquo; the statement said.</p>

<p>The campaign includes messages on banners and stickers developed to empower women when they face harassment in public vehicles, encouraging them to confront the perpetrators, inform fellow passengers, report to the conductor, and/or call the hotline of the Women&rsquo;s Commission at 1145. The campaign also seeks to educate passengers to become aware of acts of sexual violence happening around them and to speak up and intervene.</p>

<p>Chandni Joshi, former South Asia head of UNIFEM who is a part of the campaign, says, &ldquo;With women venturing into crowded public spaces ever more than before, it is appropriate to have a focus on public transport, which is a prime area of harassment. The 16 days of activism is a start of what we hope will be a continuous campaign throughout the coming year.&rdquo;</p>

<p>President of Zonta Club-Nepal Meera Jyoti says, &ldquo;We are hopeful that the message from this campaign will permeate society as a whole so that sexual violence everywhere is reduced and not just in public vehicles.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Panta, chief of Nepal&rsquo;s traffic police force, says that his force is highly sensitive to the harassment of women in crowded buses, and was happy to support the citizen&rsquo;s effort to ensure the security of riders of public transport.</p>

<p>Kanak Mani Dixit, chair of Sajha Yatayat, says, &ldquo;Though we are starting the campaign with Sajha Yatayat, we are hopeful that activists and volunteers all over the country will join in a long-term campaign to end sexual harassment in public transport and in public places.&rdquo;</p>
