Ten new insurance companies which recently got the license to operate from the Ministry of Finance were supposed to meet the paid-up capital requirement by August 23. Among the new companies, Mahalaxmi Life Insurance Company had written a letter to the Insurance Board on August 20 requesting the regulatory body to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>As the board declined to extend the deadline, the insurance company knocked the door of the finance ministry on Wednesday, August 23. Reacting to the plea made by the company, the ministry directed the board to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>Ghimire further said that after evacuating the tourists, the hoteliers joined hands to clean up the mess in a bid to bring the hotels back in operation.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

In this regard, UK aid-funded collaboration between Rockstart Impact Program and Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program was launched at Rockstart Impact&rsquo;s office in Pulchowk on Wednesday, August 23.</p>

<p>These two programs will focus on business incubation and acceleration to actively nurture and support startups with high potential for their growth via incubation, acceleration and investment.</p>

<p>The event saw an introductory presentation on both programs where the representatives of the respective institutions explained the purpose and vision of launching the programs.</p>

<p>&nbsp;&ldquo;DFID has always been finding ways to reduce poverty in Nepal by investing in different ways. We decided to invest in these programs because entrepreneurship is the only sustainable method to address poverty,&rdquo; said Gareth Weir, deputy head of Economic Development Team of DFID Nepal.</p>

<p>Bahar Kumar, Strategic Advisor at Nepal Communitere, said, &ldquo;We are excited to finally be able to fill a gap within the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Nepal by providing meaningful business incubation services to inspiring entrepreneurs and set them up for true success.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Likewise, Rockstart Impact initiator Willem Grimminck said, &ldquo;The development of Nepal is taking a turn where SMEs are playing the role of a leader, an inspirer, and a provider. We want to contribute as partners in this quest that these truly brave entrepreneurs have started.&quot;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. The application for the program is available in Rockstart&rsquo;s website www.rockstart.com/impact/.</p>

The number of companies taking the NS mark has been low as the government has not made it mandatory for all the products to acquire the NS mark.</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

Ten new insurance companies which recently got the license to operate from the Ministry of Finance were supposed to meet the paid-up capital requirement by August 23. Among the new companies, Mahalaxmi Life Insurance Company had written a letter to the Insurance Board on August 20 requesting the regulatory body to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>As the board declined to extend the deadline, the insurance company knocked the door of the finance ministry on Wednesday, August 23. Reacting to the plea made by the company, the ministry directed the board to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) informed that despite such a huge loss, the affected hotels have returned back to normal business after the August 13 floods subsided.</p>

<p>There was no human casualties during the flooding as around 600 tourists were promptly taken to safe areas with the help of elephants and tractors, informed the chairman of Regional Hotel Entrepreneurs Association, Suman Ghimire.</p>

<p>Ghimire further said that after evacuating the tourists, the hoteliers joined hands to clean up the mess in a bid to bring the hotels back in operation.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. The number of companies taking the NS mark has been low as the government has not made it mandatory for all the products to acquire the NS mark.</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

Among the new companies, Mahalaxmi Life Insurance Company had written a letter to the Insurance Board on August 20 requesting the regulatory body to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>As the board declined to extend the deadline, the insurance company knocked the door of the finance ministry on Wednesday, August 23. Reacting to the plea made by the company, the ministry directed the board to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>There was no human casualties during the flooding as around 600 tourists were promptly taken to safe areas with the help of elephants and tractors, informed the chairman of Regional Hotel Entrepreneurs Association, Suman Ghimire.</p>

<p>Ghimire further said that after evacuating the tourists, the hoteliers joined hands to clean up the mess in a bid to bring the hotels back in operation.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. The number of companies taking the NS mark has been low as the government has not made it mandatory for all the products to acquire the NS mark.</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>

Ten new insurance companies which recently got the license to operate from the Ministry of Finance were supposed to meet the paid-up capital requirement by August 23. Among the new companies, Mahalaxmi Life Insurance Company had written a letter to the Insurance Board on August 20 requesting the regulatory body to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>As the board declined to extend the deadline, the insurance company knocked the door of the finance ministry on Wednesday, August 23. Reacting to the plea made by the company, the ministry directed the board to extend the deadline.</p>

<p>A source at the ministry said that the insurance company had requested for 45 days to meet the paid-up capital requirement and the ministry instructed the board to give time as per the need of the companies.</p>

<p>However, the Insurance Board has not yet decided about extending the deadline, according the board&rsquo;s director Chiranjeevi Poudel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We will hold a meeting and decide after a few days whether to extend the deadline or not,&rdquo; said Poudel.</p>

<p>Addressing the Nepal-India Business Forum on August 23, Rana informed the gathering of Indian businesspersons that the major problem of Nepal&rsquo;s development, the political instability, is being sorted out by Nepal&rsquo;s leaders by institutionalizing the new constitution.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Our government has already successfully conducted two local elections and gearing up for next phase of elections. This has and will further provide the thrust on maintaining the political stability and ending the prolonged transitional period,&rdquo; Rana said during the meeting held in honour of visiting Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.</p>

<p>Rana further said that the government of Nepal and its bureaucratic mechanism have prioritized creating conducive environment for investment and lowering the cost of doing business in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Government has started a second-generation policy reform initiatives and reformed several laws like Industrial Enterprises Act, Company Act, Labour Act, Social Service Act, to name a few and brought new ones like Special Economic Zone, IPR Policy, Mines and Minerals Policy, among others. The much-awaited Foreign Investment Act is also expected to be ratified by the Parliament within a month. This all shows Nepal&rsquo;s willingness to support the private sector led growth,&rdquo; added Rana.</p>

<p>Rana informed the meeting attended by delegates of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ASSOCHAM that the macroeconomic indicators of Nepal have been relatively well despite the country undergoing through a rough phase in the last two decades marked by internal conflict, prolonged political transition and the devastating natural disasters.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Last year, Nepal achieved its highest economic growth of 7.5 percent, the highest in the region. In the last one decade, the per capita income of Nepal has increased significantly thereby increasing the consumption by manifold and making Nepal an attractive market,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>Even though there is a trade imbalance, the balance of payment is satisfactory, said Rana during the speech.</p>

<p>According to Rana, there has been a rise in local investments in sectors like hospitality, manufacturing, and agro processing. There is also a surge of FDI in sectors like hydropower, infrastructure and manufacturing.</p>

<p>Last year, Nepal received a commitment of about 14 billion USD during the Nepal Investment Summit. Recently, the Millennium Challenge Corporation of USA has approved the investment of USD 500 million in Nepal&rsquo;s power and transportation sector, informed Rana adding that this would further encourage FDI in Nepal.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Nepal, despite its flaws and challenges, is a profitable market. Just ask some of your colleagues from the ITC, Unilever, Dabur, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, among others, who are enjoying a good rate of return in their investments. These are the companies who have been in Nepal for about more than two decades and still doing a good business in Nepal.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Rana further informed that the volume of bilateral trade between Indian and Nepal is also increasing every year. However, the growing trade gap is a matter of great concern for Nepal.&ldquo;This is the reason why we seek greater investments from Indian private and public sector, especially in productive sector,&rdquo; she added.</p>

<p>Rana also informed the gathering that FNCCI and CII are jointly organizing Nepal-India Business Summit this year.&ldquo;Taking this opportunity, we would like to invite you all to participate in the summit and support us in enhancing Nepal-India economic cooperation,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The importers are at the receiving end because of lack of coordination among the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Department of Customs while importing food and drinks from India.</p>

<p>The importers need to take the permission in advance from the DFTQC to import food. The foreign exchange management department of Nepal Rastra Bank has made it mandatory for the importers to take permission from the DFTQC. But the Department of Customs has be letting in the goods even if the importers don&rsquo;t have permission. As a result, the importers have been unable to make payment as the bank demands the permission granted by the DFTQC.</p>

<p>The importers say that those who reach banks for payment with the customs clearance bill are sent back by the authorities saying that the banks require permission from DFTQC.</p>

<p>The central bank had recently issued a circular on August 10 stating that the importers need to take permission from the DFTQC in advance to import goods from India. Although the central bank has informed about the decision to the commercial banks, the two departments seem to be unaware about new rules.</p>

<p>Birgunj Customs Office Chief Semantak Pokharel said that they have not been informed about the permission in advance from DFTQC to import food to Nepal.&nbsp; As the customs department has not been informed about the new rules, it has been issuing clearance as it used to do before.</p>

<p>The eastern parts of the district were not much affected by the floods, according to HAN.</p>

<p>HAN&rsquo;s General Secretary Vinayak Shah informed that the hoteliers were working in collaboration with airlines companies to announce attractive packages for promotion of tourism in Chitwan. Hotels in Chitwan have been facing a hard time due to the obstruction of vehicular movement along the Mugling-Narayanghat road section.</p>

<p>At a time when the business was hard hit by transportation woes, the flood caused further damage to the hospitality business, said Shah. As the expansion of Mugling-Narayanghat road section would still take some time, hotel entrepreneurs are looking for other alternative means of transportation, including air travel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Rockstart Impact is a 100-day accelerator program that is focused on developing countries that bridges the gap between entrepreneurs and impact investors. The application for the 2017 batch is open from August 1 to October 5.</p>

<p>Out of all the applicants, 22 companies will be selected for the entrepreneurship programs out of which 10 will be finalized for the Rockstart Program where as the other 12 will be joining Nepal Communitere&rsquo;s I-Cube Program. The application for the program is available in Rockstart&rsquo;s website www.rockstart.com/impact/.</p>

			'content' => '<p>August 24: The number of industries has been increasing in the country in the recent days but the companies acquiring Nepal Standard (NS) mark is relatively low. The number of companies taking the NS mark has been low as the government has not made it mandatory for all the products to acquire the NS mark.</p>

<p>Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, informed that the government has made it compulsory for 12 kinds of products to get the NS mark.</p>

<p>Those products requiring the NS mark include OPC, PPC and PLC cements and rods; LPG cylinder; LPG valve, LPG regulator; battery; PVC cable and GI wire.</p>

<p>Upadhyay informed that the process to make NS mark compulsory for LPG bottling plants is also underway.</p>

<p>The products meeting the criteria of NS mark cannot be sold in the market without displaying the mark.</p>

<p>Of late, various industries are booming due to the investment-friendly environment. According to the Department of Industry, a total of 7031 industries have been registered till the end of last fiscal year 2016/17. However, they have not given due attention to acquire the NS mark. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, information officer at Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, altogether 212 industries have acquired NS mark for 292 products as of 2016/17.</p>

<p>The bureau had started providing the NS mark since 1990.</p>

<p>The products which meet the criteria set by the bureau can display the NS mark for up to three years. After that, they companies have to renew the license. To obtain the license of NS mark, the companies have to pay annual fee on different heads. They have to provide Rs 20,000 as deposit while the companies requiring NS mark for more than one product have to pay additional charges. The renewal fee is Rs 1000 per year.&nbsp;</p>
