Moreover, the government itself has extended the deadline for the committees to register themselves under the Companies Act till mid-March. This is the third time that the committees have been given chance to register themselves as companies.

The government issued such directive considering that there was syndicate system in transportation sector while operating public vehicles. The government had made it mandatory for the transportation cartels to run their services under the company model within mid-August of last year. However, the bodies were not registered as companies due to which the government had given them chance to get registered within mid-December this year. Nepal mostly exports to South Asia and has a trade deficit of $10.8 billion which is equivalent to 37 percent of its GDP.

According to the World Bank, the report also assesses the gap between current and potential trade in South Asia and provides a roadmap for deepening regional trade. It identifies four critical barriers to regional trade: tariffs and para tariffs, real and perceived non¬tariff barriers, connectivity costs, and a broader trust deficit.

“Situated in the world’s fastest growing region, Nepal’s potential to expand trade in goods and services is promising,” said Faris Hadad-Zervos, World Bank’s country manager for Nepal. “Addressing its own protectionist policies will help Nepal significantly increase its exports not only to South Asia, but also to the rest of the world.”

The report further said that South Asian countries impose greater trade barriers for imports from within the region than from the rest of the world. More than one-third of intraregional trade falls under sen¬sitive lists, which are goods that are not offered concessional tariffs under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA). More than 36 percent of Nepal’s imports from South Asia are under sensitive lists, more than any other country in the region.

The report recommends targeting sensitive lists and para tariffs to enable real progress on SAFTA and calls for a multi-pronged effort to address non-tariff barriers, focusing on information flows, procedures, and infrastructure.

Connectivity is a key enabler for robust regional cooperation in South Asia. Poor land and air connectivity prevent South Asian countries from reaping the benefits of shared borders, the report adds. “There are no flights between Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Maldives, or Afghanistan. And only one flight per week between Nepal and Pakistan,” Sanjay Kathuria, World Bank’s lead economist and lead author of the report. “Lack of connectivity is a key contributor to the high cost of trade between Nepal and South Asia and improving connectivity will take Nepal a long way.”

The report suggests that policy makers in South Asia may draw lessons from the India-Sri Lanka air services liberalization experience, where liberalization was gradual and incremental, but policy persistence paid off. Today, there are 147 flights per week between Colombo and at least 14 cities in India.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-16', 'modified' => '2018-12-16', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9408', 'image' => '20181216021911_aaa.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-16 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 6 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9627', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'NTC's Microwave Radio Link Expands Across Upper Mustang', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal Telecom has expanded microwave radio link across upper Mustang.', 'content' => '
December 14: Nepal Telecom has expanded microwave radio link across upper Mustang.

The link, a wireless communication technology that uses high frequency beams of radio waves to provide high speed wireless connections, has replaced satellite technology, according to a news report published by Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS).

The service has started at Lo Manthang, Ghami, Charang, Surkhang, Chhusang, Samar and Syangboche by setting up GSM and BTS towers, the state-owned national news agency quoted senior engineer at the NTC branch office Keshab Sharma as saying.

"Following the implementation of the service, there has been significant improvement in the availability of mobile network as well as voice and data services provided by the NTC," he said.

“The service has also helped cut additional financial burden suffered by the NTC,” he added.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-14', 'modified' => '2018-12-14', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9401', 'image' => '20181214124012_Upper Mustang.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-14 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 7 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9625', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'One Million Tourists visit Nepal in 11 months', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal’s tourism sector is all set to create a historic record as the country saw the arrival of one million tourists in the last 11 months of the current year.', 'content' => '
December 14: Nepal’s tourism sector is all set to create a historic record as the country saw the arrival of one million tourists in the last 11 months of the current year.

According to a news report published by Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Nepal Tourism Board has stated that 1,001,930 foreigners visited Nepal as of November 2018 since the beginning of this calendar year.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-16', 'modified' => '2018-12-16', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9408', 'image' => '20181216021911_aaa.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-16 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 6 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9627', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'NTC's Microwave Radio Link Expands Across Upper Mustang', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal Telecom has expanded microwave radio link across upper Mustang.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-14', 'modified' => '2018-12-14', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9401', 'image' => '20181214124012_Upper Mustang.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-14 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 7 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9625', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'One Million Tourists visit Nepal in 11 months', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal’s tourism sector is all set to create a historic record as the country saw the arrival of one million tourists in the last 11 months of the current year.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-16', 'modified' => '2018-12-16', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9408', 'image' => '20181216021911_aaa.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-16 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 6 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9627', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'NTC's Microwave Radio Link Expands Across Upper Mustang', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal Telecom has expanded microwave radio link across upper Mustang.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-14', 'modified' => '2018-12-14', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9401', 'image' => '20181214124012_Upper Mustang.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-14 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 7 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9625', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'One Million Tourists visit Nepal in 11 months', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal’s tourism sector is all set to create a historic record as the country saw the arrival of one million tourists in the last 11 months of the current year.', 'content' => '

Since the transportation committees failed to meet the second deadline, the government again gave them a lifeline by extending the deadline once again upon the request from the transport entrepreneurs.

According to the president of Federation of Nepalese National Transportation Entrepreneurs Yogendra Karmacharya, they are positive about registering the transportation committees and associations under the Companies Act but added that they need some more time for this.

“The government has extended the deadline till mid-March and we will adopt the company model by that time.”

According to the Department of Transportation Management, more than 200,000 public vehicles are plying the roads across the country out of which 3000 transportation committees have registered for route permits for 8000 vehicles. Speaking at a programme on Saturday, December 15, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation Raghubir Mahaseth said the formation of transportation authority will be carried out for the management of transportation sector in the country. For that, a committee has been formed and it will start operation under the Public-Private Partnership model from April 14, 2019, informed Mahaseth.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-16', 'modified' => '2018-12-16', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9412', 'image' => '20181216043536_tt.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-16 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 4 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9640', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Cyclone Phethai Causes Chilly Day', 'sub_title' => 'Light rain and snowfall likely at a few places across the country', 'summary' => 'December 17: Cloudy skies, light rain and snowfall at a few places across the country have been forecast for today (Monday, December 17) due to the impact of cyclone Phethai which originated from the Bay of Bengal.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-16', 'modified' => '2018-12-16', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9408', 'image' => '20181216021911_aaa.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-16 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 6 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9627', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'NTC's Microwave Radio Link Expands Across Upper Mustang', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal Telecom has expanded microwave radio link across upper Mustang.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2018-12-14', 'modified' => '2018-12-14', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9401', 'image' => '20181214124012_Upper Mustang.jpg', 'article_date' => '2018-12-14 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 7 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9625', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'One Million Tourists visit Nepal in 11 months', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'December 14: Nepal’s tourism sector is all set to create a historic record as the country saw the arrival of one million tourists in the last 11 months of the current year.', 'content' => '
