The study found that female migrant workers face work-related health risks, which are often related to exploitation. Thus, recruiting agencies/employers should provide information on health risks and training for preventive measures, said the statement released on January 3.

Figures from the Department of Foreign Employment of Nepal have shown that over 176,000 Nepali women were granted labour permits to work abroad since records started in 2008, traveling mainly to the UAE, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and Jordan. Since 2016, Nepalese authorities outlawed labour permits for domestic work in the Gulf, amidst reports of the abuse of Nepalese migrants working as maids in the region, the statement said.

A dissemination session, held in January, looked to highlight issues within the female migrant worker minority group, at which Bournemouth University’s study exploring the healthcare problems of more than 1,000 migrant returnees aged 14-51 was shared. Speaking about the study, Professor Edwin van Teijlingen at Bournemouth University stressed, “It is important that the people publish their findings either positive or negative so that others can learn from it. Publishing good quality-research in Nepal ensures a wider global audience.”

Findings reflected that more than a quarter of women had experienced health problems working abroad. Fever, accidents and severe illness were commonly reported, alongside with working without breaks. It was also found that migrant women who are illiterate, had been severely maltreated or tortured in the workplace, were not being paid on time, and migrant women who had family problems at home were significantly associated with health problems in their host country in the Middle East, the statement further said.

Liverpool John Moores University’s Professor Padam Simkhada said, “This is one of several projects we are working on in the field of health and migration. It combines both health and human rights issues.” He added: “We often forget that working aboard offers female migrant workers an opportunity to learn new skills that are of use when returning home.”

The study and the subsequent dissemination session also raised questioned over Nepalese government intervention.

Concerns were also raised over the current ban on women working domestically in the Gulf region, as many Nepalese migrants defy this to travel illegally, thus encountering additional risk, with an 8.95 per cent increase in Nepalese applications to work in other industries abroad seen just a year after the restrictions were imposed.

The UK universities worked alongside two Nepalese organisations, Green Tara Nepal and POURAKHI Nepal, in this research.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-01-06', 'modified' => '2019-01-06', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9524', 'image' => '20190106020612_PR Nepal2 migrant.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-01-06 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 3 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9746', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Committee to Probe Wide-Body Aircraft Scam', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'January 4: The government has formed a high-level probe committee to investigate into the alleged irregularities in the procurement of the wide-body aircraft for the Nepal Airlines Corporation. Big corporate houses, companies, banks and financial institutions, representatives of the private sector as well as trade unions have said in unison that the amendment proposal aims to demoralize both the industrialists and the workers. They have demanded the government to withdraw the amendment proposal and initiate dialogues with the concerned stakeholders.

In this regard, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) held discussions with the representatives of multinational companies operating in Nepal on Tuesday (January 1) and reached to the conclusion that the amendment proposal is inappropriate. The FNCCI also urged the government to reconsider its decision to amend the Act.

“The amendment proposal is certain to spoil the good relation between the employer and the employee. Therefore, we held discussions on requesting the government to withdraw the amendment proposal,” said Shekhar Golcha, senior vice president of FNCCI.

There will definitely be a revolt if the government snatches away the perks and benefits that the workers have been enjoying, argued Golcha.

“This decision will have a long-term effect in the industrial sector,” he added.

Nepal Bankers’ Association also held discussions regarding this issue on Tuesday.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-01-06', 'modified' => '2019-01-06', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9524', 'image' => '20190106020612_PR Nepal2 migrant.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-01-06 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 3 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9746', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Committee to Probe Wide-Body Aircraft Scam', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'January 4: The government has formed a high-level probe committee to investigate into the alleged irregularities in the procurement of the wide-body aircraft for the Nepal Airlines Corporation. ', 'content' => '
January 1: Stakeholders have warned that the industrial sector will get engulfed in turmoil if the parliament endorses an amendment proposal of the Bonus Act 2030 forwarded by the government.

The association’s executive director Anil Sharma said that the government’s decision will have a direct impact on the banking sector as thousands of employees will be denied their perks and benefits which they have been receiving so far.

“The amendment will demoralize thousands of workers,” he said.

Likewise, the trade union affiliated to Nepali Congress warned the government of grave consequences if the government goes ahead with the amendment proposal which is against the wishes of both the employers and the employees.

The Bonus Act 2030 currently has a provision of depositing 30 percent of amount left after distributing bonuses to the employees at the social security fund of the government. However, the government’s amendment proposal seeks to take away 70 percent of the amount, leaving very little benefits for the employees.
', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2019-01-02', 'modified' => '2019-01-02', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '9504', 'image' => '20190102020856_aaaaaa.jpg', 'article_date' => '2019-01-02 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '20' ) ), (int) 13 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '9729', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Bandipur receives 150,000 Tourists in a Year', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'January 2: Tanahun’s tourism hub Bandipur welcomed 150,000 tourists during a period of one year.
