April 9: As many as 3,327 Nepali youths have been flying to foreign countries for jobs formally on a daily basis lately. A total of 99,839 Nepali youths took the labour permits and left the country in the month of Falgun 2079, 23.29 percent up from same period in 2078, according to the Department of Foreign Employment.
A total of 80,977 youths had obtained labour permits and went for the jobs overseas in the month of Falgun 2078.
To be eligible to go for job overseas, one has to receive labour permit from the Department of Foreign Employment. But, the real number of youths going for foreign employment is much higher than the data made available by the Department of Foreign Employment.
A large number of people enter European countries, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, UAE on Visitor Visa, and start working illegally, claim refugee status or begin to work on working visa as well, say labour experts.
The trend among the youths to leave for the foreign jobs is increasing rapidly due to limited employment opportunities in the country.
Apart from people going to the foreign country on work permit, the number of people moving to foreign countries on student visa is also huge. According to Rastriya Samachar Samiti, 80,000 students have received No Objection letter(NOC)from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in the eight months of the current fiscal year.
Of late, remittance sent by Nepalis employed abroad has become a lifeline to Nepal’s economy. Foreign employment and remittances have proved to be instrumental to lift the economic conditions of impoverished families in Nepal.
The remittance has temporary benefits for the country and its economy. It will be fatal to the country’s economy in the long run, experts warned.
