The direct effect of demonetization was felt in countries like Nepal and Bhutan that transact in Indian currency. They are now busy analyzing the possible effects of the GST.

Earlier, different taxes imposed by the central and state governments of India had made the price of imported goods from India very high.

With the implementation of the GST, there will be uniform rate in all products. It has also been analysed that the current effect of the GST will be positive. However, there is a negative side of the GST as well, and the first effect of it will be seen in the import of goods to Nepal.

The GST will increase the transportation tax rate by three percent. Due to this, the transportation fare will rise by three percent, say industrialists and traders.

Transportation tax which was 15 percent earlier has reached 18 percent. This is the reason for the increase in transportation fares while importing goods to Nepal.

Likewise, the Nepali import transactions are done in Indian currency. The GST will not accept that kind of transaction as export and only those in USD is considered as export.

Therefore, Nepal will not receive the GST facilities that other countries dealing in USD get.

According to Pashupati Murarka, former president of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), the huge informal trade with India will now come through formal channel.

Meanwhile, Rabi Shankar Sainju, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) said they have written to the Indian government requesting waiver on service tax to give relief to the importers. “We are waiting for the reply,” he said.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 5 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '
June 28: Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days. According to Western Region Hotel Association, Pokhara’s Chairman Bikal Tulachan, Indian tourists basically visit Pokhara to beat the summer heat and to spend their vacation.

“Most of the Indian tourists come to Pokhara to get away from the excessive heat in India,” said Tulachan, adding, “The Indian tourists have increased in comparison to last year.”

Among the Indian tourists, most of them are from the cities of the bordering states.

The presence of Indian tourists in Pokhara was almost nil in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2015 and during the blockade imposed by India. Tourism entrepreneurs are hopeful that the situation will become better as the inflow of Indian tourists has gradually increased since last year. Most of the tourists in Pokhara at present are Indians.

Indian tourists account for around 40 percent occupancy of Pokhara-based hotels, according to Tulachan. The remaining tourists are Nepalis while the number of foreign tourists other than Indians is negligible.

Before the earthquake, majority of tourists during this season used to be Chinese. But after the quake, Chinese tourists have hardly traveled to Pokhara.

Avia Club’s Manager Rijan Rijal informed that most of the tourists at present are Indians. According to Rijal, around 70 percent of tourists who come for ultralight flights are Indians.

Although the number of Indian tourists visiting pokhara has increased significantly, the overall situation is not satisfactory, says Hotel Landmark’s operator Om Pandey.

“Half of the tourists are Indians. But we still need to do a lot to bring more tourists,” he said.

Indian tourists are considered vital for the hospitality business of Pokhara. Even a small number of tourists from India, which shares border with Nepal, would significantly boost the tourism industry in Pokhara. Hotel entrepreneurs are active in increasing the number of Indian tourists, for which the Western Region Hotel Association has been launching a special campaign ‘Chaliye Pokhara’ for the last seven years.

This campaign has helped to a great extent in bringing Indian tourists to Pokhara, says the association’s former chairman Biplav Poudel, who operates Hotel Barahi. There has been an excessive use of heavy equipment for the purpose. Such equipment rely heavily on petroleum products. This is one of the prime reasons for the continued import of diesel and petrol at the same level despite the load-shedding hours being reduced significantly.

According to Sharad Kumar Gauchan, president of the Federation of Contractors’ Association Nepal (FCAN), altogether 8,000 heavy equipment are in operation round the clock at present. This is just the record maintained by the entrepreneurs affiliated to the federation.

“We cannot ascertain the number of equipment that is in use of the contractors who are not associated with us,” said Gauchan.

Vice President of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, Bishnu Kumar Agrawal, had said in a public function that there had been a 200 percent increase in the import of heavy equipment last year. Agrawal himself is a heavy equipment dealer.

The data presented by Agrawal implies that there has been an increase in the import of petroleum products in proportion to the increase in import of such equipment.

Besides the heavy equipment, lots of other machineries that operate on petroleum products are used for the development works. The increase in budget for development works and the subsequent increase in expenditure of the budget indicate that there has been a rise in use of heavy equipment every year.

The immediate past president of FCAN, Jayaram Lamichhane, says that it is essential to import diesel for the machineries for the development works despite having sufficient electricity.

“It is necessary to evaluate why the import of petrol has not declined,” said Lamichhane, adding, “If we are to expedite development works, the import of diesel will increase unimaginably.”

Lamichhane says that the current rate of increase in development works would result in 50 percent increase in import of petroleum products every year.

The government has allocated Rs 126.40 billion as development budget for the fiscal year 2074/75. It has been estimated that around 84 percent of the development budget set for the current fiscal year 2073/74 would be spent by the end of this month.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-27', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5868', 'image' => '20170627011343_jd_1050k_1-1024x683.jpg', 'article_date' => '2017-06-27 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '11' ) ), (int) 12 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6082', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Muktinath Hands over Insurance Amount', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Muktinath Development Bank has handed over the specified insurance amount to its debtors from its microfinance department.', 'content' => '
June 21: Muktinath Development Bank has handed over a specified amount of insurance to its debtor from its microfinance department.

The bank handed over the insurance amount to Kalpana Gurung, daughter of Bishnu Maya Gurung who died on February, 2017.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 5 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-27', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5868', 'image' => '20170627011343_jd_1050k_1-1024x683.jpg', 'article_date' => '2017-06-27 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '11' ) ), (int) 12 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6082', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Muktinath Hands over Insurance Amount', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Muktinath Development Bank has handed over the specified insurance amount to its debtors from its microfinance department.', 'content' => '
June 21: Muktinath Development Bank has handed over a specified amount of insurance to its debtor from its microfinance department.

The bank handed over the insurance amount to Kalpana Gurung, daughter of Bishnu Maya Gurung who died on February, 2017.

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 5 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-28', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5875', 'image' => null, 'article_date' => '2017-06-28 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '16' ) ), (int) 5 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6090', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Indian tourists beat the summer heat in Pokhara', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Tourist-hub Pokhara has seen a rise in the number of Indian tourists in recent days.', 'content' => '

', 'published' => true, 'created' => '2017-06-27', 'modified' => '2017-06-28', 'keywords' => '', 'description' => '', 'sortorder' => '5868', 'image' => '20170627011343_jd_1050k_1-1024x683.jpg', 'article_date' => '2017-06-27 00:00:00', 'homepage' => false, 'breaking_news' => false, 'main_news' => true, 'in_scroller' => false, 'user_id' => '11' ) ), (int) 12 => array( 'Article' => array( 'id' => '6082', 'article_category_id' => '1', 'title' => 'Muktinath Hands over Insurance Amount', 'sub_title' => '', 'summary' => 'Muktinath Development Bank has handed over the specified insurance amount to its debtors from its microfinance department.', 'content' => '
June 21: Muktinath Development Bank has handed over a specified amount of insurance to its debtor from its microfinance department.

The bank handed over the insurance amount to Kalpana Gurung, daughter of Bishnu Maya Gurung who died on February, 2017.
