NRB and Bank of Korea to Prepare Macroeconomic Model for Nepal

June 28: Bank of Korea (BoK) has agreed to provide technical assistance to prepare a macroeconomic model for the economic projection of Nepal by the end of 2017. According to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), researchers from Yonsai University of Korea will be engaged in the project.

Director at the Office of the Governor of NRB, Dr Prakash Kumar Shrestha, and Jong Suk Won, deputy director general of International Relations Department of BoK signed the agreement to this effect on June 27.

According to the agreement, BoK will assist the Central Bank of Nepal in economic research model, currency management, implementation of payment and clearance system, economic projection system, and reform in supervision and regulation system. NRB said that BoK has been helping the NRB by providing them technical assistance from time to time.

In the programme, Nara Bahadur Thapa, executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank said that BoK and NRB will jointly study the topics including use of modern equipment in the banking sector. The group will include seven members from BoK and four members from NRB.

Thapa shared that the group will also publish a book on the basis of the six-month study. He shared that though NRB has created a model related to economic projection, many areas of Nepal lack proper statistics.

Jong Suk Won, the Deputy Director General of BOK said that he is delighted to study the dimension of Nepali economy and informed that his team will present a report to NRB after study.

According to Thapa, Korea stands on the fourth position among the countries which have invested in Nepal.

He said that Korea's investment has been increasing in Nepal and that with more Korean investment in Nepal, there is increase in the trade deficit of Nepal with it.
