<p>The number of public transport vehicles is very minimal in comparison to the urban population. This has been raising problem of transportation for the mass. Though the government had decided to emphasize on operating big vehicles for mass transportation and approve route accordingly, the decision has not been found to be implemented properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lack of effective implementation of transportation management plans of the government has been still affecting the public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) has registered 316 companies after the ban of syndicate system informed, Tulsi Ram Aryal, DoTM spokesperson. The department has allocated the companies with their respective transportation route along with vehicles operation permit.</p>

<p>Transportation entrepreneurs are allowed to operate their vehicles for public transportation only after registering their companies at the department. The government after declaring the end of transportation cartel has made the registration process mandatory.</p>

<p>Aryal informed that the department is committed to making the public transportation service effective. The ban of syndicate system has brought some improvement in the transportation service, he added.</p>

<p>He informed that a total of 316 companies have registered with the department and taken new route permit. The department claim that, instead of instant progress , it aims for gradual improvement in the sector.</p>

<p>With the end of transportation syndicate, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has formed a committee for the improvement of transportation system and its management.&nbsp; The committee is chaired by Keshav Sharma, joint secretary of the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee was requested to present its reports one month after its formation but has failed to present its findings within the allocated time. However the committee had requested for two-week extension period, which has been approved by the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee chaired by Sharma had under taken its responsibilities on June 11.</p>

<p>The participants discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, reads a joint press statement issued recently.</p>

<p>During the meeting, EU congratulated Nepal for successfully holding the local, provincial and federal elections in 2017 terming them as major political milestone. The EU informed the Nepali delegation of recent political developments in the EU, including the new Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in the field of security and defence, and several other policy initiatives. The Nepali side shared plans and priorities of its government for the forthcoming period.</p>

<p>Nepal informed the EU delegation that, with the completion of elections, the constitution had come into full operation. The Nepali delegation also outlined its strategies of graduation from Least- Developed-Country (LDC) status.</p>

<p>The EU and Nepal also took stock of the implementation of the ongoing cooperation, and expressed their satisfaction at the progress made in various areas of cooperation particularly in the education sector (primary, secondary and vocational education) as well as in nutrition, where Nepal is pioneering the multi-sector nutrition plan and in rural development by adding value to certain products like coffee to stimulate job creation and the growth of economy. Both parties concurred that such cooperation should continue to be guided by government&rsquo;s priority areas.</p>

<p>On the occasion of the joint commission meeting, both parties signed the Financing Agreement for the EU Contribution to Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD) in Nepal worth &euro;40 million of which &euro;36 million has been earmarked for budget support and &euro;3.75 million for complementary measures. In addition, under the School Sector Development Programme (SSDP), the EU released the amount of &euro;19.094 million under the budget support modality to the treasury of Nepal. This payment constitutes a part of the overall &euro;61.4 million EU support to Nepal&rsquo;s School Sector Development Plan.</p>

<p>Both parties discussed the macro-economic situations in the EU and in Nepal respectively. There was also an in-depth exchange on their trade relations, where they reiterated the importance for Nepal of taking greater advantage of trade preferences granted to Nepal by the EU under the Everything But Arms scheme (EBA).</p>

<p>The EU reiterated its continued support to enhancing Nepal&rsquo;s trading capacity including through trade facilitation measures, and product development. Investment opportunities under the Asia Investment Facility and cooperation with the European Investment Bank were also discussed.</p>

<p>Air safety was also on the agenda, with both parties aiming to address outstanding safety and security issues. The EU congratulated Nepal on the significant increasing interest and successful application of Nepali students in the Erasmus+ programme.</p>

<p>The joint commission meeting was co-chaired by Paola Pampaloni, EEAS deputy managing director for Asia and Pacific, for the European Union and Shanker Das Bairagi, foreign secretary of Nepal. The next EU-Nepal Joint Commission will take place in Nepal in 2020.</p>

<p>NIC Asia has extended its banking hours at a time when majority of the banks are operating only from 9 am to 3 pm.</p>

<p>Sudhir Nath Pandey, deputy CEO and spokesperson of NIC Asia Bank, informed that the bank has extended its operation hours with the aim to make its services more effective and customer-friendly.</p>

<p>According to Pandey, 20 branches of the bank will provide services between 9 am to 7 pm from Sunday to Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday.</p>

<p>A total of twenty branches ie ten located inside Kathmandu and ten outside the valley are currently providing 10-hour banking service per day.</p>

<p>The bank&#39;s branches at Tripureswar, Maharajgunj, Samakhusi, New Baneswar, Pulchowk, Thapathali, Thamel, Kamaladi, Bishalbazar and Khichapokhari within the valley are working extra hours since Tuesday.</p>

<p>Similarly, the branches in Birgunj, Narayanghat, Dharan, Biratnagar, Itahari, Pokhara, Butwal, Damak, Banke and Birtamode are also operating for 10 hours a day outside of Kathmandu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>NIC Asia has been providing services across the country with its network of 224 branches, 218 ATMs, 14 extension counters and 11 branchless banking facilities.</p>

<p>Issuing a statement, UNDP said that the new initiative will be implemented in districts adjoining the Pokhara-Kathmandu-Bardibas corridor. &nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;The project is aimed at raising the incomes of nearly 10,000 smallholder farmers through strengthening the value chain of fruit and vegetable production in the country,&rdquo; said the press release issued by UNDP. &ldquo;As part of the project, there will be special focus on production maximization, post-harvest technology development and rollout, and improved market linkage.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Under the agreement, KOICA will support US$ 5 million and UNDP will contribute US$ 0.5 million respectively for&nbsp;&nbsp;the joint initiative to be implemented in about 40 municipalities in twelve districts in Province 3 and 4, namely Dhading, Kavre, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Gorkha, Kaski, and Syanja until the end of 2022.</p>

<p>The MoU was signed by Dr Hyungkyoo Kim, country director of&nbsp; KOICA Nepal and Renaud Meyer, country director of UNDP. Before that, joint secretary at the Ministry of Finance Shreekrishna Nepal, and the joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives Tej Subedi signed the project document with the UNDP at a function held at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu on June 26.</p>

<p>The value chain development project focuses on increasing production, reducing post-harvest losses and improving the marketing system for selected fruit and vegetables. Through its efforts, cooperatives and farmers&rsquo; groups will have better access to production technology, as well as improved crop production practices. Post-harvest technologies will be developed and transferred to farmers in collaboration with the Nepal Agriculture Research Council, the statement further said.</p>

<p>According to UNDP, support to physical facilities, organizational management and access to market price information will be provided to collection centers and satellite markets to improve market linkages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement noted that marketed volumes of fruit and vegetables are low in Nepal and farmers have limited access to agriculture technology.</p>

<p>&quot;Post-harvest losses are high, with estimates suggesting losses between 10 and 14% for fruit and vegetables. Careless handling of crops during loading and unloading, and lack of storage facilities at collection centres are some contributing factors. In this context, this programme will also help to establish 20 collection centres and satellite markets. The programme will help Nepal achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a direct contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).&quot;</p>

<p>Dangol, who is also the proprietor of Khokana Stone Carving, said that around 10,000 visitors observed the stone crafts during the exhibition. Seventeen different religious and cultural crafts including Boudha Stupa, Chiva, Manjushree, Laxmi, Lokeshwor, Ganesh, Panas, Sukunda etc were the major attraction of the exhibition.</p>

<p>According to Dangol, the exhibition aimed to preserve the ancient craft of sculpture which is on the decline and also to prevent theft of ancient sculpture. He further said that the exhibition was organised to make the world know about Nepali stone crafts and sculpture and also to inform the coming generations about their own art.</p>

<p>Dangol, who has been engaged in this sector since he was 25 years, had also participated in Shanghai World Expo 2010 held in China.</p>

<p>The number of public transport vehicles is very minimal in comparison to the urban population. This has been raising problem of transportation for the mass. Though the government had decided to emphasize on operating big vehicles for mass transportation and approve route accordingly, the decision has not been found to be implemented properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lack of effective implementation of transportation management plans of the government has been still affecting the public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) has registered 316 companies after the ban of syndicate system informed, Tulsi Ram Aryal, DoTM spokesperson. The department has allocated the companies with their respective transportation route along with vehicles operation permit.</p>

<p>Transportation entrepreneurs are allowed to operate their vehicles for public transportation only after registering their companies at the department. The government after declaring the end of transportation cartel has made the registration process mandatory.</p>

<p>Aryal informed that the department is committed to making the public transportation service effective. The ban of syndicate system has brought some improvement in the transportation service, he added.</p>

<p>He informed that a total of 316 companies have registered with the department and taken new route permit. The department claim that, instead of instant progress , it aims for gradual improvement in the sector.</p>

<p>With the end of transportation syndicate, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has formed a committee for the improvement of transportation system and its management.&nbsp; The committee is chaired by Keshav Sharma, joint secretary of the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee was requested to present its reports one month after its formation but has failed to present its findings within the allocated time. However the committee had requested for two-week extension period, which has been approved by the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee chaired by Sharma had under taken its responsibilities on June 11.</p>

<p>The participants discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, reads a joint press statement issued recently.</p>

<p>During the meeting, EU congratulated Nepal for successfully holding the local, provincial and federal elections in 2017 terming them as major political milestone. The EU informed the Nepali delegation of recent political developments in the EU, including the new Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in the field of security and defence, and several other policy initiatives. The Nepali side shared plans and priorities of its government for the forthcoming period.</p>

<p>Nepal informed the EU delegation that, with the completion of elections, the constitution had come into full operation. The Nepali delegation also outlined its strategies of graduation from Least- Developed-Country (LDC) status.</p>

<p>The EU and Nepal also took stock of the implementation of the ongoing cooperation, and expressed their satisfaction at the progress made in various areas of cooperation particularly in the education sector (primary, secondary and vocational education) as well as in nutrition, where Nepal is pioneering the multi-sector nutrition plan and in rural development by adding value to certain products like coffee to stimulate job creation and the growth of economy. Both parties concurred that such cooperation should continue to be guided by government&rsquo;s priority areas.</p>

<p>On the occasion of the joint commission meeting, both parties signed the Financing Agreement for the EU Contribution to Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD) in Nepal worth &euro;40 million of which &euro;36 million has been earmarked for budget support and &euro;3.75 million for complementary measures. In addition, under the School Sector Development Programme (SSDP), the EU released the amount of &euro;19.094 million under the budget support modality to the treasury of Nepal. This payment constitutes a part of the overall &euro;61.4 million EU support to Nepal&rsquo;s School Sector Development Plan.</p>

<p>Both parties discussed the macro-economic situations in the EU and in Nepal respectively. There was also an in-depth exchange on their trade relations, where they reiterated the importance for Nepal of taking greater advantage of trade preferences granted to Nepal by the EU under the Everything But Arms scheme (EBA).</p>

<p>The EU reiterated its continued support to enhancing Nepal&rsquo;s trading capacity including through trade facilitation measures, and product development. Investment opportunities under the Asia Investment Facility and cooperation with the European Investment Bank were also discussed.</p>

<p>Air safety was also on the agenda, with both parties aiming to address outstanding safety and security issues. The EU congratulated Nepal on the significant increasing interest and successful application of Nepali students in the Erasmus+ programme.</p>

<p>The joint commission meeting was co-chaired by Paola Pampaloni, EEAS deputy managing director for Asia and Pacific, for the European Union and Shanker Das Bairagi, foreign secretary of Nepal. The next EU-Nepal Joint Commission will take place in Nepal in 2020.</p>

<p>NIC Asia has extended its banking hours at a time when majority of the banks are operating only from 9 am to 3 pm.</p>

<p>Sudhir Nath Pandey, deputy CEO and spokesperson of NIC Asia Bank, informed that the bank has extended its operation hours with the aim to make its services more effective and customer-friendly.</p>

<p>According to Pandey, 20 branches of the bank will provide services between 9 am to 7 pm from Sunday to Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday.</p>

<p>A total of twenty branches ie ten located inside Kathmandu and ten outside the valley are currently providing 10-hour banking service per day.</p>

<p>The bank&#39;s branches at Tripureswar, Maharajgunj, Samakhusi, New Baneswar, Pulchowk, Thapathali, Thamel, Kamaladi, Bishalbazar and Khichapokhari within the valley are working extra hours since Tuesday.</p>

<p>Similarly, the branches in Birgunj, Narayanghat, Dharan, Biratnagar, Itahari, Pokhara, Butwal, Damak, Banke and Birtamode are also operating for 10 hours a day outside of Kathmandu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>NIC Asia has been providing services across the country with its network of 224 branches, 218 ATMs, 14 extension counters and 11 branchless banking facilities.</p>

<p>Issuing a statement, UNDP said that the new initiative will be implemented in districts adjoining the Pokhara-Kathmandu-Bardibas corridor. &nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;The project is aimed at raising the incomes of nearly 10,000 smallholder farmers through strengthening the value chain of fruit and vegetable production in the country,&rdquo; said the press release issued by UNDP. &ldquo;As part of the project, there will be special focus on production maximization, post-harvest technology development and rollout, and improved market linkage.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Under the agreement, KOICA will support US$ 5 million and UNDP will contribute US$ 0.5 million respectively for&nbsp;&nbsp;the joint initiative to be implemented in about 40 municipalities in twelve districts in Province 3 and 4, namely Dhading, Kavre, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Gorkha, Kaski, and Syanja until the end of 2022.</p>

<p>The MoU was signed by Dr Hyungkyoo Kim, country director of&nbsp; KOICA Nepal and Renaud Meyer, country director of UNDP. Before that, joint secretary at the Ministry of Finance Shreekrishna Nepal, and the joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives Tej Subedi signed the project document with the UNDP at a function held at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu on June 26.</p>

<p>The value chain development project focuses on increasing production, reducing post-harvest losses and improving the marketing system for selected fruit and vegetables. Through its efforts, cooperatives and farmers&rsquo; groups will have better access to production technology, as well as improved crop production practices. Post-harvest technologies will be developed and transferred to farmers in collaboration with the Nepal Agriculture Research Council, the statement further said.</p>

<p>According to UNDP, support to physical facilities, organizational management and access to market price information will be provided to collection centers and satellite markets to improve market linkages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement noted that marketed volumes of fruit and vegetables are low in Nepal and farmers have limited access to agriculture technology.</p>

<p>&quot;Post-harvest losses are high, with estimates suggesting losses between 10 and 14% for fruit and vegetables. Careless handling of crops during loading and unloading, and lack of storage facilities at collection centres are some contributing factors. In this context, this programme will also help to establish 20 collection centres and satellite markets. The programme will help Nepal achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a direct contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).&quot;</p>

<p>Dangol, who has been engaged in this sector since he was 25 years, had also participated in Shanghai World Expo 2010 held in China.</p>

<p>The number of public transport vehicles is very minimal in comparison to the urban population. This has been raising problem of transportation for the mass. Though the government had decided to emphasize on operating big vehicles for mass transportation and approve route accordingly, the decision has not been found to be implemented properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lack of effective implementation of transportation management plans of the government has been still affecting the public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) has registered 316 companies after the ban of syndicate system informed, Tulsi Ram Aryal, DoTM spokesperson. The department has allocated the companies with their respective transportation route along with vehicles operation permit.</p>

<p>Transportation entrepreneurs are allowed to operate their vehicles for public transportation only after registering their companies at the department. The government after declaring the end of transportation cartel has made the registration process mandatory.</p>

<p>Aryal informed that the department is committed to making the public transportation service effective. The ban of syndicate system has brought some improvement in the transportation service, he added.</p>

<p>He informed that a total of 316 companies have registered with the department and taken new route permit. The department claim that, instead of instant progress , it aims for gradual improvement in the sector.</p>

<p>With the end of transportation syndicate, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has formed a committee for the improvement of transportation system and its management.&nbsp; The committee is chaired by Keshav Sharma, joint secretary of the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee was requested to present its reports one month after its formation but has failed to present its findings within the allocated time. However the committee had requested for two-week extension period, which has been approved by the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee chaired by Sharma had under taken its responsibilities on June 11.</p>

<p>On the occasion of the joint commission meeting, both parties signed the Financing Agreement for the EU Contribution to Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD) in Nepal worth &euro;40 million of which &euro;36 million has been earmarked for budget support and &euro;3.75 million for complementary measures. In addition, under the School Sector Development Programme (SSDP), the EU released the amount of &euro;19.094 million under the budget support modality to the treasury of Nepal. This payment constitutes a part of the overall &euro;61.4 million EU support to Nepal&rsquo;s School Sector Development Plan.</p>

<p>Both parties discussed the macro-economic situations in the EU and in Nepal respectively. There was also an in-depth exchange on their trade relations, where they reiterated the importance for Nepal of taking greater advantage of trade preferences granted to Nepal by the EU under the Everything But Arms scheme (EBA).</p>

<p>The EU reiterated its continued support to enhancing Nepal&rsquo;s trading capacity including through trade facilitation measures, and product development. Investment opportunities under the Asia Investment Facility and cooperation with the European Investment Bank were also discussed.</p>

<p>Air safety was also on the agenda, with both parties aiming to address outstanding safety and security issues. The EU congratulated Nepal on the significant increasing interest and successful application of Nepali students in the Erasmus+ programme.</p>

<p>The joint commission meeting was co-chaired by Paola Pampaloni, EEAS deputy managing director for Asia and Pacific, for the European Union and Shanker Das Bairagi, foreign secretary of Nepal. The next EU-Nepal Joint Commission will take place in Nepal in 2020.</p>

<p>NIC Asia has extended its banking hours at a time when majority of the banks are operating only from 9 am to 3 pm.</p>

<p>Sudhir Nath Pandey, deputy CEO and spokesperson of NIC Asia Bank, informed that the bank has extended its operation hours with the aim to make its services more effective and customer-friendly.</p>

<p>According to Pandey, 20 branches of the bank will provide services between 9 am to 7 pm from Sunday to Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday.</p>

<p>A total of twenty branches ie ten located inside Kathmandu and ten outside the valley are currently providing 10-hour banking service per day.</p>

<p>The bank&#39;s branches at Tripureswar, Maharajgunj, Samakhusi, New Baneswar, Pulchowk, Thapathali, Thamel, Kamaladi, Bishalbazar and Khichapokhari within the valley are working extra hours since Tuesday.</p>

<p>Similarly, the branches in Birgunj, Narayanghat, Dharan, Biratnagar, Itahari, Pokhara, Butwal, Damak, Banke and Birtamode are also operating for 10 hours a day outside of Kathmandu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>NIC Asia has been providing services across the country with its network of 224 branches, 218 ATMs, 14 extension counters and 11 branchless banking facilities.</p>

<p>Issuing a statement, UNDP said that the new initiative will be implemented in districts adjoining the Pokhara-Kathmandu-Bardibas corridor. &nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;The project is aimed at raising the incomes of nearly 10,000 smallholder farmers through strengthening the value chain of fruit and vegetable production in the country,&rdquo; said the press release issued by UNDP. &ldquo;As part of the project, there will be special focus on production maximization, post-harvest technology development and rollout, and improved market linkage.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Under the agreement, KOICA will support US$ 5 million and UNDP will contribute US$ 0.5 million respectively for&nbsp;&nbsp;the joint initiative to be implemented in about 40 municipalities in twelve districts in Province 3 and 4, namely Dhading, Kavre, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Gorkha, Kaski, and Syanja until the end of 2022.</p>

<p>The MoU was signed by Dr Hyungkyoo Kim, country director of&nbsp; KOICA Nepal and Renaud Meyer, country director of UNDP. Before that, joint secretary at the Ministry of Finance Shreekrishna Nepal, and the joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives Tej Subedi signed the project document with the UNDP at a function held at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu on June 26.</p>

<p>The value chain development project focuses on increasing production, reducing post-harvest losses and improving the marketing system for selected fruit and vegetables. Through its efforts, cooperatives and farmers&rsquo; groups will have better access to production technology, as well as improved crop production practices. Post-harvest technologies will be developed and transferred to farmers in collaboration with the Nepal Agriculture Research Council, the statement further said.</p>

<p>According to UNDP, support to physical facilities, organizational management and access to market price information will be provided to collection centers and satellite markets to improve market linkages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement noted that marketed volumes of fruit and vegetables are low in Nepal and farmers have limited access to agriculture technology.</p>

<p>&quot;Post-harvest losses are high, with estimates suggesting losses between 10 and 14% for fruit and vegetables. Careless handling of crops during loading and unloading, and lack of storage facilities at collection centres are some contributing factors. In this context, this programme will also help to establish 20 collection centres and satellite markets. The programme will help Nepal achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a direct contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).&quot;</p>

<p>The number of public transport vehicles is very minimal in comparison to the urban population. This has been raising problem of transportation for the mass. Though the government had decided to emphasize on operating big vehicles for mass transportation and approve route accordingly, the decision has not been found to be implemented properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lack of effective implementation of transportation management plans of the government has been still affecting the public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) has registered 316 companies after the ban of syndicate system informed, Tulsi Ram Aryal, DoTM spokesperson. The department has allocated the companies with their respective transportation route along with vehicles operation permit.</p>

<p>Transportation entrepreneurs are allowed to operate their vehicles for public transportation only after registering their companies at the department. The government after declaring the end of transportation cartel has made the registration process mandatory.</p>

<p>Aryal informed that the department is committed to making the public transportation service effective. The ban of syndicate system has brought some improvement in the transportation service, he added.</p>

<p>He informed that a total of 316 companies have registered with the department and taken new route permit. The department claim that, instead of instant progress , it aims for gradual improvement in the sector.</p>

<p>With the end of transportation syndicate, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has formed a committee for the improvement of transportation system and its management.&nbsp; The committee is chaired by Keshav Sharma, joint secretary of the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee was requested to present its reports one month after its formation but has failed to present its findings within the allocated time. However the committee had requested for two-week extension period, which has been approved by the ministry.</p>

<p>The committee chaired by Sharma had under taken its responsibilities on June 11.</p>

<p>The participants discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, reads a joint press statement issued recently.</p>

<p>During the meeting, EU congratulated Nepal for successfully holding the local, provincial and federal elections in 2017 terming them as major political milestone. The EU informed the Nepali delegation of recent political developments in the EU, including the new Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in the field of security and defence, and several other policy initiatives. The Nepali side shared plans and priorities of its government for the forthcoming period.</p>

<p>Nepal informed the EU delegation that, with the completion of elections, the constitution had come into full operation. The Nepali delegation also outlined its strategies of graduation from Least- Developed-Country (LDC) status.</p>

<p>The EU and Nepal also took stock of the implementation of the ongoing cooperation, and expressed their satisfaction at the progress made in various areas of cooperation particularly in the education sector (primary, secondary and vocational education) as well as in nutrition, where Nepal is pioneering the multi-sector nutrition plan and in rural development by adding value to certain products like coffee to stimulate job creation and the growth of economy. Both parties concurred that such cooperation should continue to be guided by government&rsquo;s priority areas.</p>

<p>On the occasion of the joint commission meeting, both parties signed the Financing Agreement for the EU Contribution to Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD) in Nepal worth &euro;40 million of which &euro;36 million has been earmarked for budget support and &euro;3.75 million for complementary measures. In addition, under the School Sector Development Programme (SSDP), the EU released the amount of &euro;19.094 million under the budget support modality to the treasury of Nepal. This payment constitutes a part of the overall &euro;61.4 million EU support to Nepal&rsquo;s School Sector Development Plan.</p>

<p>Both parties discussed the macro-economic situations in the EU and in Nepal respectively. There was also an in-depth exchange on their trade relations, where they reiterated the importance for Nepal of taking greater advantage of trade preferences granted to Nepal by the EU under the Everything But Arms scheme (EBA).</p>

<p>The EU reiterated its continued support to enhancing Nepal&rsquo;s trading capacity including through trade facilitation measures, and product development. Investment opportunities under the Asia Investment Facility and cooperation with the European Investment Bank were also discussed.</p>

<p>Air safety was also on the agenda, with both parties aiming to address outstanding safety and security issues. The EU congratulated Nepal on the significant increasing interest and successful application of Nepali students in the Erasmus+ programme.</p>

<p>The joint commission meeting was co-chaired by Paola Pampaloni, EEAS deputy managing director for Asia and Pacific, for the European Union and Shanker Das Bairagi, foreign secretary of Nepal. The next EU-Nepal Joint Commission will take place in Nepal in 2020.</p>

<p>Sudhir Nath Pandey, deputy CEO and spokesperson of NIC Asia Bank, informed that the bank has extended its operation hours with the aim to make its services more effective and customer-friendly.</p>

<p>According to Pandey, 20 branches of the bank will provide services between 9 am to 7 pm from Sunday to Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday.</p>

<p>A total of twenty branches ie ten located inside Kathmandu and ten outside the valley are currently providing 10-hour banking service per day.</p>

<p>The bank&#39;s branches at Tripureswar, Maharajgunj, Samakhusi, New Baneswar, Pulchowk, Thapathali, Thamel, Kamaladi, Bishalbazar and Khichapokhari within the valley are working extra hours since Tuesday.</p>

<p>Similarly, the branches in Birgunj, Narayanghat, Dharan, Biratnagar, Itahari, Pokhara, Butwal, Damak, Banke and Birtamode are also operating for 10 hours a day outside of Kathmandu.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>NIC Asia has been providing services across the country with its network of 224 branches, 218 ATMs, 14 extension counters and 11 branchless banking facilities.</p>

<p>Issuing a statement, UNDP said that the new initiative will be implemented in districts adjoining the Pokhara-Kathmandu-Bardibas corridor. &nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;The project is aimed at raising the incomes of nearly 10,000 smallholder farmers through strengthening the value chain of fruit and vegetable production in the country,&rdquo; said the press release issued by UNDP. &ldquo;As part of the project, there will be special focus on production maximization, post-harvest technology development and rollout, and improved market linkage.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Under the agreement, KOICA will support US$ 5 million and UNDP will contribute US$ 0.5 million respectively for&nbsp;&nbsp;the joint initiative to be implemented in about 40 municipalities in twelve districts in Province 3 and 4, namely Dhading, Kavre, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Gorkha, Kaski, and Syanja until the end of 2022.</p>

<p>The MoU was signed by Dr Hyungkyoo Kim, country director of&nbsp; KOICA Nepal and Renaud Meyer, country director of UNDP. Before that, joint secretary at the Ministry of Finance Shreekrishna Nepal, and the joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives Tej Subedi signed the project document with the UNDP at a function held at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu on June 26.</p>

<p>The value chain development project focuses on increasing production, reducing post-harvest losses and improving the marketing system for selected fruit and vegetables. Through its efforts, cooperatives and farmers&rsquo; groups will have better access to production technology, as well as improved crop production practices. Post-harvest technologies will be developed and transferred to farmers in collaboration with the Nepal Agriculture Research Council, the statement further said.</p>

<p>According to UNDP, support to physical facilities, organizational management and access to market price information will be provided to collection centers and satellite markets to improve market linkages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement noted that marketed volumes of fruit and vegetables are low in Nepal and farmers have limited access to agriculture technology.</p>

<p>&quot;Post-harvest losses are high, with estimates suggesting losses between 10 and 14% for fruit and vegetables. Careless handling of crops during loading and unloading, and lack of storage facilities at collection centres are some contributing factors. In this context, this programme will also help to establish 20 collection centres and satellite markets. The programme will help Nepal achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a direct contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).&quot;</p>
