Podway System will Revolutionise Public Transport

Kathmandu Podway Company is lobbying to introduce a new type of public transport service in Nepal. The company believes that the podway technology can significantly speed up public transport above ground, especially in the context of overcrowded land transport in major urban areas of the country. In a conversation with New Business Age, the company's director, Dr Shambhu Chaudhary, discussed this technology, its potential benefits for Nepal and the efforts being made to fund it. Excerpts:

Could you give an overview of how the Kathmandu Podway system will operate and the technology behind it?

The podway system is the culmination of 40 years of research in Belarus. Currently, a 400-metre podway system is operational in Dubai, with an additional 4.5 km nearing completion. This extensively tested and certified system offers safe transportation for both passengers and freight. Recognising the pressing need for reliable public transport in Nepal, Podway Nepal is offering innovative solutions for urban cities. We believe that robust public transportation is essential for economic development, and our vision is to introduce scientifically designed transport systems across Nepal.

What strategies will the company take to scale its operations and expand the podway network to serve a wider geographic area in Nepal?

We are currently strategising to implement the podway system in Lumbini and the Kathmandu Valley. Additionally, we have conducted a feasibility study in Karnali. In the first phase, we plan to develop and operate a podway system on Gaushala-Chabahil stretch of the Ring Road. It is very congested and road widening on this stretch is impractical. We have also envisioned potential routes along the river corridor of the Kathmandu Valley. Further expansion plans include routes from Dhulikhel to Nagdhunga.

The country's laws already recognise podway as a legitimate means of transportation. What factors are hindering your progress in moving forward with the implementation?

We are making strides in the right direction. The fact that Nepal's laws have recognised podway as a valid means of transportation is a significant step forward for us. We are engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Physical Planning and Transport, as well as the Ministry of Urban Development, regarding the advancement of this project. Additionally, we have held discussions with Kathmandu Metropolitan City and other local governments. With these efforts underway, we are hopeful for the imminent implementation of podway projects in Nepal.

We have noticed terminologies like UNICAR, UNIBUS, UNIFLASH and UNICONT on your website. Which of these products do you intend to launch first?

We have the capability to implement any system, but the choice ultimately hinges on the government's requirements and preferences. For urban centres like Kathmandu, UNIBUS may prove to be the most suitable option, although the decision ultimately rests with the government.

Is Podway Nepal primarily a supplier or a service provider?

We primarily serve as a technology provider. But we are also equipped to operate the system under public-private partnerships (PPP), if needed. Our capabilities extend from conducting studies to designing, constructing and operating the system. In essence, we offer a comprehensive solution.

Could you provide some background information about your company, including its technological background, the background of the promoters, and any relevant details?

As an authorised company for this technology in Nepal, we possess authentication documents and offer end-to-end solutions. Our promoters come from diverse backgrounds, including engineering, medicine and business. With a highly competent team of promoters and staff, alongside qualified personnel, we are fully prepared to deliver projects efficiently.

How does Podway Nepal intend to integrate with Kathmandu's existing transportation infrastructure and enhance the city's mobility ecosystem?

Public buses currently serve as the primary mode of public transportation in Nepal. Podway Nepal aims to develop a strategy that integrates timetables, routes, planning and coordination for all modes of transportation. Drawing inspiration from cities like Dubai, where metros, buses and trams all operate seamlessly under an integrated approach, we aspire to implement a similar concept in Nepal.

How secure and safe is the podway system?

The podway system is fully certified as safe. Each pod is equipped with a rescue system and two extra generators to ensure redundancy in case of generator failure. Moreover, the system has undergone rigorous testing to ensure its reliability and safety.

How does Podway Nepal intend to tackle potential challenges, such as regulatory obstacles or public acceptance, associated with introducing a new transportation mode?

It is common for investors and service providers to expect the government to bear political and regulatory risks. Given the challenges people face with current transportation options, there is likely to be strong public enthusiasm for the introduction of a safe and comfortable system like podway. Therefore, the government should expedite the implementation of this project without delay.

Could you elaborate on the environmental sustainability aspects of the podway?

Podway operates entirely on electric power which benefits the environment significantly by reducing emissions. Additionally, since we generate our electricity, it diminishes the need for importing fossil fuels. With its minimal emissions, podway serves as a crucial step towards protecting our planet.

How do you intend to make the podway system affordable and accessible to all segments of the population?

While public transportation has traditionally been associated with serving the needs of the less affluent, we aim to revolutionise this concept to ‘Public Transportation for All’. To achieve this, we plan to offer subsidies for marginalised communities thereby ensuring inclusivity and accessibility. Our vision is to emulate the models seen in developed countries, where public transportation is accessible to everyone regardless of their socioeconomic status.

How does Podway Nepal envision contributing to economic development and job creation?

As the system grows, Podway Nepal anticipates job creation, decreased road accidents, lowered pollution levels, and reduced dependency on imported vehicles and fossil fuels. Crucially, it will also shorten travel times for commuters, alleviate road congestion, and spur economic and social activities.

Could you provide insight into the ongoing research and development initiatives aimed at enhancing podway technology and user experience?

Research is ongoing at the Sharjah Research Center in the UAE to further refine the podway technology, aiming for increased efficiency and effectiveness. While the technology is already proven, continuous research efforts are essential for its enhancement. Additionally, we have conducted studies specifically tailored to the Kathmandu Valley and the Karnali Province to ensure that our implementation aligns with local needs and conditions.

How does Podway Nepal intend to collaborate with government agencies, urban planners, and other stakeholders?

We recognise the crucial role of government support in our endeavours. Our discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Urban Development, and provincial and local governments. Our project benefits from the guidance of experts who lend their expertise to ensure its success.
