Cervical cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix (the opening of uterus). Almost all cervical cancers are caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a common virus that can be passed from one person to another during sexual intercourse. Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but it’s easily preventable.
Marie Stopes International Nepal has been working to help prevent cervical cancer by providing HPV vaccine and HPV DNA Screening test through its various centers. MSI Nepal provides WHO certified brand of HPV vaccine. Preventing HPV infections through vaccination is the most effective (and cost-effective) approach to reducing the incidence of cervical cancer. This has been already observed and proved in many developed countries. There are 2 doses of vaccine for girl from the age of 9 to 14 years, and 3 doses for those above 14 years. The HPV vaccine is recommended for all females from 9 to 45 years of age.
The HPV DNA test, which is being offered by Marie Stopes, can effectively detect this causative virus in woman above 25 years of age. Since persistent HPV infection is the cause of cervical cancer, it is recommended to find out whether the woman has persistent HPV infection or not. This can be achieved by recommending HPV DNA test every 3 years for general population. But if the test is positive, the level of persistence of HPV infection and any changes of cervix will have to be detected. If there are any changes, it can be treated in early phases.
• Cervical cancer ranks as the 1st most diagnosed cancer among women in Nepal.
• In Nepal, every 1 in 2 women diagnosed of the cervical cancer die of the disease.
• Cervical cancer does not show symptoms in many women.
• Cervical cancer is preventable!
Marie Stopes International Nepal has been conducting awareness campaign supported by Australian government for cervical cancer screening and vaccination.
