Relief at last!

Controversial entrepreneur Durga Prasain received a significant reprieve on March 25 when the Supreme Court directed the Medical Education Commission and Kathmandu University to grant affiliation to his Birtamod-based B&C Medical College. After his medical college was denied affiliation, Prasain moved the apex court in July 2020 arguing that it was unjust to deny affiliation to his college which has met all the prescribed criteria. Formerly aligned with the CPN (Maoist Center), Prasain switched allegiance to the CPN-UML in the hope of getting affiliation for his medical college licence by cultivating a favourable relationship with UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli when the latter was serving as the Prime Minister. Despite Oli's support, Prasain was unable to secure the licence even though his medical college received a letter of intent from the Education Ministry in as early as 2014. Denied a seat in the central committee of UML, Prasain gradually distanced himself from the party and adopted a critical stance towards Oli. Of late, he is actively involved in a campaign advocating for the reinstatement of monarchy.
