“Government too should start ranking educational institutions”

While receiving the invitation for this programme, I was a bit sceptical that this event may just be a tool for higher secondary schools to attract students after the SEE examinations. After arriving here, I am happy to find that this programme is about celebrating the achievements of Nepali B-schools. I would like to congratulate all the winners. Rating-ranking of institutions is not a big thing, but maintaining the status in a sustainable manner is a bigger deal. 

The NewBiz B-schools Rating-Ranking-Awards is a new concept in Nepal to encourage the management colleges. I am happy to know that the awards are the fifth in the series. There is a long international practice in rating-ranking of educational institutions. There is a need for Nepali universities and colleges to enhance the quality of education they provide in order to get into the top position of such lists international recognition. At present, it is quite difficult for our educational institutions to get global recognition. For example, Tribhuvan University cannot get listed in the top 1,000 universities of the world. So, our sole focus should be on finding ways to enhance the quality of education.

General people would be informed about the importance of programmes like this if the University Grants Commission (UGC) carries out ranking of the colleges affiliated universities that get UGC grants. It is important for teachers and students to know about the ranks of their colleges. Malaysia, for instance, has government rating-ranking programmes for the education sector.  There, the education bodies organise formal events for conducting the programmes. I will raise this issue in the ministry. It is indeed a praiseworthy initiative by New Business Age Pvt Ltd to set the right trend in the country’s education sector.
