The newly opened Nepal Mediciti Hospital has adopted the ‘Multi-disciplinary Approach’ in the treatment it provides under which multiple doctors will consult each other. Any disease will now be diagnosed within 24 hours by the medical team and referred to the specialist doctor who will then discuss the case with other specialist doctors if needed on how to treat the patient at the shortest time possible, says the hospital. Nepal Mediciti has more than 65 specialist doctors ready to provide professional medical services.
“The approach has been effective in delivering treatments at the shortest time possible through coordination between the best medical minds in the country,” says Bijay Rimal, general manager at Nepal Mediciti Hospital. According to him, the hospital has been receiving overwhelming response from patients about the new treatment initiation.
The specialist doctors will be available in the hospital for 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Nepal Mediciti also claims that it is probably the first hospital in Nepal that is a house to all specialist doctors under the same roof for cross-consultations. “With the establishment of Mediciti as the ‘multi-specialty hospital’ having excellent medical departments, Nepali patients will no more have to visit overseas hospitals and bear exorbitant medical expenses,” says Rimal. He further adds that more than 200,000 Nepalis travel overseas annually and spend almost Rs 26 billion for medical treatments. “Our goal is to make treatment affordable and easily accessible to the public and reduce the number of patients opting treatment abroad and our new approach will help us in this endeavour,” he mentions.
Unlike other hospitals, doctors at Mediciti hospital give ample consultation and time to the patients while doctors of different departments consult each other. “For instance, there is a board of doctors for tumor patients who meet twice a week to discuss with doctors from other major departments on treating cancer patients,” informs Sunil Kumar Sharma Dhakal, medical director at Nepal Mediciti.
Sharma who is also the head of department of general surgery and digestive diseases explains that the meeting discusses medical cases of maximum seven patients and is attended by specialist doctors including radiologist and pathologist, among others. In addition, the hospital has been providing OPD service for 12 hours a day beginning from eight in the morning. Mediciti claims to be the first hospital to do so.“With 12 hours of OPD service, patients will not have to rush anymore for checkups and follow upsduring their office hours,” says Rimal.
Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)
Nepal Mediciti Hospital has also been operating the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) to reduce fatalities arising from accidents and other emergency conditions. The emergency helicopter service enables immediate medical care to patients in urgent need through helicopter rescues and inbuilt medical technologies. The hospital has four helicopter teams;each manned by four different doctors equipped with modern technologies and can rush to four emergency situations at once. The four are respectively led by Dr Sanjay Karki, Dr Sanij Singh, Dr Abhijit Adhikari and Dr Dhirendra Kumar Malla, all of whom are specialised in emergency medical services (EMS). According to Rimal, the doctors and supporting staff provide required medical assistance to the patientsafter reaching the emergency site and bring them back to the hospital for further treatment.“Based on the recommendation from the doctors in the HEMS team, patients are admitted to the respective care units,” he shares.
