Etihad’s Everest Clean-Up Campaign

Etihad Airways along with the Tenzing Hillary- Everest Marathon, Coca- Cola Nepal and the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee launched a clean-up campaign on Everest. The campaign was coincided with the 11th Tenzing Hillary- Everest Marathon, the world’s highest marathon and one of the most demanding and spectacular trail runs in the world. This year’s marathon marked the 60th anniversary of the first Everest ascent and saw the participation of more than 100 runners from over 20 countries. The runners took off from the Everest base camp to Namche Bazar covering a distance of 42 kilometres. On their way to the top, marathon runners cleaned up and collected the plastic wastes.

“Mount Everest is still struggling to deal with the after effects of mass tourism which includes the colossal amount of waste left behind by climbers and trekkers. We are pleased to be participating in this worthy initiative and hope it highlights the importance of reducing waste and preserving the fragile environment surrounding Everest,” said Pawana Shrestha, Etihad Airways’ Country Manager in Nepal.
