September 24: The number of tourists arriving in Nepal in the first eight months of 2018 has increased by a significant number in comparison to the tourist arrival in the corresponding period of last year, a data released by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) shows.

The data shows that the number has increased by 18.2 percent and the arrival stood at 680,996 in the first eight months this year.

According to NTB, the tourist arrival from India grew by 37.3 percent in August in comparison to the figures of the same month in 2017.  “The overall arrival from the SAARC countries also saw a growth of 48.3 percent in August in comparison to the same month of 2017,” the data shows.

“Visitors’ arrival from China has continued to soar with a growth of 63.9 percent in August. Likewise, the numbers of visitors from Japan and Malaysia have also increased by 3.7 percent and 34.9 percent respectively,” a press statement issued by NTB reads.

Meanwhile, tourist arrival from the UK, Germany and France also increased by 21.7 percent, 31.9 percent and 25.7 percent respectively in August. However, the arrival from the Netherlands declined by 30 percent.

The arrival from Australia and New Zealand also saw a growth of 39.8 percent and 18.5 percent in August as compared to the arrival figures of 2017. Similarly, the number of visitors from the United States and Canada also saw a growth of 15 percent each in August.

“Better positioning of Nepal’s tourism endowments has enhanced Nepal’s image and resulted in increased interest from the major source markets. Co-operation and partnership between public and private sector has also played a pivotal role to increase the number of tourists in Nepal,” the statement reads.
