August 27: Revive, a company that recycles used textiles, won the 3rd National Social Business Challenge 2018 organised by Yunus Social Business Center (YSBC) under King’s College. The event was held on August 26 at Hotel Yak & Yeti, Kathmandu. The company received a cash prize of Rs 100,000. 

Hariyo Paat Sabaiko Saath received cash prize of Rs 50,000 in the thematic area ‘food and women’ while Your Agricultural Product received cash prize of Rs 25,000 for the theme sustainable agriculture. Likewise, Waste Recyclers received cash prize of Rs 40,000 for the theme renewable energy and   Whpedia won cash prize of Rs 50,000 as jury’s special selection.

Gokarna Bista, minister for Labour, Employment and Security, inaugurated the programme by pouring water on plants. Speaking at the programme, Bista said that one of the components of entrepreneurship that Nepal lacks is investment.

“The main challenge in Nepal is unemployment. To solve this problem, youths should opt for entrepreneurship,” said Bista.

He further highlighted the importance of economic development through entrepreneurship and expressed his support for the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Speaking at the programme, Ashutosh Tiwari, founder and managing director of Safal Partners, said entrepreneurship is about continuous learning for which learning attitude is important.

Ten companies namely Naya Jagir, Tiffin Express, Waste Recyclers, Titepati, Krishima Yuwa, Your Agricultural Product, Whpedia, Hariyo Paat Sabaiko Saath, Hamro Pathshala and Revive presented their business plans in the pitching session. 

Managing director of a private company named SmartPaani, Suman Shakya, who is also a consultant, trainer and entrepreneur said being an entrepreneur is not easy but it is a choice.

“You see a problem and try to solve it through entrepreneurship,” he added in the panel discussion about social entrepreneurship.

The programme concluded after distribution of token of love to the jury members, facilitators, mentors and partners.  

YSBC received applications from 55 teams from different walks of life throughout Nepal. From among the applicants, 22 teams were selected for second round and 15 teams for third round.

YSBC has been organising social business challenge since the last three years.
