July 26: Members of the National Tourism Journalists Association of Nepal (NATOJ) have expressed their concern regarding the issue of increasing global warming and environment pollution. Highlighting the contribution of mountain peaks in the tourism sector, they stressed on conserving the mountains of Nepal during a recent function.

Speaking at the cleanliness campaign organised by NATOJ, the concerned stakeholders said that though Mount Everest is representing Nepal’s identity, increasing trash and environmental problem are discrediting the mountain.  They said that the government has to be serious about protecting and managing the mountains instead of just collecting revenue from climbers.

Minister for Forest and Environment Shakti Basnet said that Nepal’s tourism industry cannot be promoted unless Mt Everest and other mountains are preserved and promoted. Informing that the government has started Clean Nepal Campaign, Basnet assured that the campaign will take initiative to clean Mt Everest. He even claimed that he would put the issue in front of developed nations and make effort to get their support.

Likewise, former president of Nepal Mountaineering Association, Ang Tshering Sherpa, said that the changes in ecosystem and increasing global warming are affecting mountains and rivers as well as the livelihood of the mountain-dwellers in Nepal. Saying that the Everest Cleanliness Campaign is a challenging task, he informed that with their individual effort they have been collecting the garbage of Everest area since 2008.

Similarly, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal’s BOD member Nima Nuru Sherpa also said that since Everest is Nepal’s identity, cleanliness of the area is important.
