The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said during the programmen held on Tuesday, June 19, that the rescue and fire-fighting equipment at the TIA are up-to-date.

Speaking at the programme, Raj Kumar Chhetri, general manager of TIA, said that the airport has all the basic equipment although it lacks sufficient air safety equipment as in developed countries. He added that the airport's heavy fire-fighting engines have the capacity to reach the incident site for rescue within two to three minutes in case of crash or emergency at the airport.

He further said that TIA will be well equipped with all resources and fire apparatus within six months.

According to the guidelines of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and CAAN safety regulation, TIA is in the ninth category of rescue and firefighting service having minimum of three ARFF vehicles, shared Daya Nanda Chaudhary, deputy manager of Aviation Rescue and Fire-fighting Division at TIA.

TIA at present has underground water reservoir with storage capacity of 100,000 liters that can fill water in a fire engine within 5 to 7 minutes. TIA also has overhead water tank, dry chemical powders, and different kinds of fire extinguishers for quick response if crash occurs at the airport. The airport at present has 66 staff for emergency rescue operation at the airport.
