Rs 84 billion allocated for energy sector

May 30: The government has allocated Rs 83.89 billion for energy sector for the fiscal year 2018/19.

The budget aims to make additional energy available within three years and supply electricity as per the demand within five years.

The budget presented by Finance Minister Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada in the federal parliament on Tuesday, May 29, proposes terming the years between 2018 and 2028 an energy decade.

The budget plan has focused on issues that were raised by Nepal Electricity Authority and Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.

The budget has included construction of Butwal-Gorakhpur II and other cross-border transmission lines and expansion of internal high-tension lines and Galchi-Rasuwagadi-Kerung cross-border transmission line, which were also in the white paper presented by Barsaman Pun, minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.

The budget has given extra attention to smart meter and smart grids, projects of the Ministry of Energy and Nepal Electricity Authority. The involvement of private sector in construction of transmission lines, solutions to domestic investment in the development of energy sector are included in the budget plan.

Projects like compensation distribution to people affected by the Budigandaki Hydroelectricity Project, construction of West Seti Hydro Electricity Project with national resources and initiation of Karnali Chisapani Project are included in the budget plan. However, the budget plan is silent about providing the required fund to execute the plans.
