New Budget to be 5 Percent Less

April 3: The budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2018-19 will be five percent less than the budget of the current fiscal year. The government is preparing to reduce the budget against the prevalent tradition of increasing budget each year since a long time.

The budget is set to decrease due to the ceiling set by the National Planning Commission, according to which the upcoming budget will be less than the budget for the current FY.

A source at the NPC told New Business Age that the budget for the upcoming year will be less by around 70 billion. That means the budget will be of around Rs 1.2 trillion in accordance to the ceiling set by the NPC. The source said that the ceiling was set after repeated meetings and long analysis.

A high-ranking official of NPC informed that it recommended the ceiling due to the difficulty faced in the management of budget source in the current FY.

“Although the country has adopted federalism, we still do not have reliable source. Therefore, we do not have any means to increase the size of budget,” said the source on condition of anonymity.

The source further said that another reason for announcing the ceiling is that a large amount of money collected from internal sources will have to be allocated for the provinces and the local units.

The government announced a budget of Rs 1.278 trillion for the current FY, while setting a target of collecting Rs 730 billion revenue.
