March 29: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has directed those commercial banks which had pledged to open new branches at local levels to start operation the branches by mid-May.

As per the commitment letter submitted to the central bank by the commercial banks, they have to open a total of 243 branches at local levels where there are no banking services at present.

The central bank has adopted strict measures in line with the monetary policy to ensure that the commercial banks set up branches at the areas lacking infrastructures as per the commitments of the commercial banks, informed Narayan Prasad Poudyal, spokesperson at NRB.

Besides the 243 branches, NRB issued a circular on Wednesday, March 28, to the commercial banks to establish branches in 116 local levels within this fiscal year for which they had made commitment earlier. NRB has also directed the banks to submit the progress report regarding the establishment of the branches to the central bank and the Banks and Financial Institutions Regulation Department on a fortnightly basis.

The central bank has also warned to punish the banks falling to establish the branches within the deadline.

The circular has also directed the banks to partner with the local governmental bodies to get support for security and infrastructure while establishing the branches.

NRB has been emphasizing for the need to involve commercial banks in transactions related to government funds after the country adopted the new federal system.

Despite opening branch offices, many banks have been found providing financial services only after a year of establishing the branches.

It is still way very difficult to operate a branch in rural and remote areas which lack sufficient infrastructure, said Gyanendra Prasad Dhungana, chairman of Nepal Bankers Association.
