January 26: Entrepreneurs have urged the government to change its view towards customs points as revenue collection centres.  In a programme organised on the eve of the 66th International Customs Day on Thursday, January 25, they said that the government should also focus on making the process of importing goods simpler and easier if they collect revenue.

During the programme, the participants put forward their demand to create an environment to use bills for the goods bought by consumers.

They also urged the government to make the customs evaluation process automatic.

Finance Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki said that the government is ready to lead the country to economic prosperity in coordination with the private sector. He informed that the government is positive in solving problems at policy level.

“The government is determined to make Nepal’s customs service as good as that of the developed countries,” Karki further added.

Rajesh Kaji Shrestha, president of Nepal Chamber of Commerce, said, “There is a need to make customs service easier and e-commerce should be developed enabling consumers to pay revenue from home.” He added that the amendment to the Customs Act should be taken care of as soon as possible.

Revenue secretary, Shishir Kumar Dhungana claimed that the ministry is determined to modernize customs to make the system simple and easy. He said, “The Ministry of Finance has been working with Nepal Rastra Bank to introduce gateway of e-payment within the next fiscal year and 11,000 export-import (ExIm) codes were distributed this year.”
