January 25: The Cement Manufactures Association of Nepal (CMAN) has urged the concerned government authorities to make efforts to resume the import of clinker from Raxual customs point into Nepal. According to CMAN, the obstruction in the supply of clinker from India has badly affected the cement industries in border areas near Birgunj.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, January 24, the association requested to ease the import of clinker as the cement industries of Birgunj region are facing acute shortage of the key raw material.

“Of the total demand in the country, 35 percent of clinker comes from the southern neighbor. Investment amounting to billions of rupees in the cement industries is under risk because of the shortage of clinker in the country,” the statement reads, adding that the shortage of clinker will result in the decline of production. As a result, there will be shortage of cement in the Nepali market.

According to the association, of the total clinker import from India, 20 percent comes to Nepal via Birgunj customs point. The association also claims that it has requested all the member industries to work to control the price hike of cement in the market.

The association has also requested the dealers, retailers, consumers and projects not to keep unnecessary stock of cement. The association is committed to ease the supply of cement in the market through its member industries for the smooth operation of construction works.
