SC Orders Government to Expedite Electricity Production in Jumla

October 26: The Supreme Court has issued a mandamus order to the government to expedite electricity generation in Jumla as per its scheduled programs.  A joint bench of justices Om Prakash Mishra and Dambar Bahadur Shahi issued such order in response to a writ petition filed by a former lawmaker representing Jumla district.

The government had pledged to produce 5 megawatts of electricity in Jumla during the budget announcement of 2015/16. Although the government had made such commitment, there was no progress to that end prompting former lawmaker Lalit Jung Shahi to file a writ petition at the Supreme Court.

The writ petition states that the district has generator with a capacity to produce only 250 kilowatts of electricity. The  generator set up almost four decades ago is still being used despite its sorry state. Shahi’s lawyer Padam Bahadur Shahi said in the petition that the generator cannot produce electricity up to its potential as its has already worn out.

The writ petition further states that the whole Karnali zone has been lagging behind due to the low production of electricity in Jumla.

In response to the court’s order, the government wrote to the apex court that it has already completed the survey of Jawa Khola for the production of 5 MW electricity as per its commitment. However, the government has not started the remaining works after completing the survey.

Former lawmaker Shahi said that he had raised the issue at the Parliament time and again but the government turned a deaf ear. He said he was forced to move the court after the government ignored his pleas.
