October 26: The calibration (weight test) of tankers, which carry petroleum products from neighboring India to Nepal, will now be done in Nepal itself. The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) has set up a calibration unit in Hetauda for this purpose.

As the construction of infrastructure has completed, the calibration unit is all set to operate within the next few weeks. According to Bishwa Bahu Pudasaini, director general of NBSM, the construction of calibration unit has completed, and it will start the operation by the end of this month.

“Infrastructure like calibration tower and other basic structures have already been completed. A total of around Rs 4.5 million has been invested for this,” he said, adding that other infrastructures will be added to the calibration unit with an additional investment of almost Rs 10 million.

Currently, NBSM is working on connecting the calibration unit with basic necessities like water, electricity, among others. The Nepali tankers have been undergoing calibration test at Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) depots.

“There were lots of difficulties while doing calibration in India. The tankers will not face any difficulties now,” Pudasaini said, adding that all the tests like flow meter, water meter, among others will now be done in Nepal itself.
