July 4: With an objective of easing and managing the transportation system in the Kathmandu Valley, the government is adding 66 new routes in the capital from July 16.

The Project Implementation Unit under the Kathmandu Sustainable Urban Transportation Project (KSUTP) had identified the routes and recommended the Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) for implementation.

The DoTM has agreed to give permission to open the new routes. Currently, there are more than 200 routes in operation in the valley.

The project has recommended the new routes in order to manage the traffic congestion seen in the recent days. DoTM Spokesperson Tok Raj Pandey informed that new routes will come into operation after classifying them into three groups. The routes will be classified into primary, secondary and tertiary based on the capacity of vehicles that ply the routes.

The routes for operating large vehicles and public transportation will be classified as primary routes, while the secondary routes will be for medium-sized vehicles and tertiary routes for small vehicles. The Project Implementation Unit identified the routes in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

In the first phase of implementation, vehicles will be operated on trial basis in the 10-km route along Sinamangal-Ratnapark-lainchaur-Samakhusi-Gongabu-New Bus Park road, according to the Project Implementation Unit chief Khadga Lal Shrestha

“We are signing a contract for the 10-km route, where 17 large buses will be operated,” said Shrestha.

ADB will provide loan for 80 percent for the implementation of the project. Shrestha said that the loan and grant will be released through the Town Development Fund (TDF).

It has been estimated that the buses which will be operated by Digo Yatayat Pvt Ltd along the route will cost Rs 85 million, according to Shrestha.
