May 8: Nepal Telecom (NT) will be providing broadband internet service to earthquake-affected districts.

The NT will provide the high speed internet service to Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts by utilizing the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund (RTDF).

 The NT and Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on May 4 to expand the internet service in those districts. The MoU was signed by Kamini Rajbhandari, Managing Director of NT and Digambar Jha, Chairman of NTA.

Speaking at the programme, Chairman Jha said that the company will participate in such projects in the future as well, whereas Rajbhandari thanking NTA for supporting in the implementation of the second project, made commitment for the conclusion of the project on time.

The detailed study on the districts has already carried out. She informed that high speed internet will be provided through suitable technologies among GSM, CDMA, ADSL and WiMax, according to the location of the place.

According to the project, NT will provide fast internet services to government and community schools, health posts, Ayurved centers, ward offices, rural municipalities and municipalities in the earthquake-affected districts. Likewise, the operation and repair will also be done by the company itself.

The broadband internet will also be expanded to seven districts besides the above, which include Gorkha, Dhading, Makawanpur, Dolkha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli and Okhaldhunga. According to NTA, the process has already started for the expansion of internet in those districts.

NTA, has already signed agreements with Subisu Cable Net in the first phase at a cost of Rs 207.08 million in Gorkha, Dhading and Makwanpur districts.

Similarly, in the second phase, the Authority has signed agreement with Mercantile Communications for expanding internet services in Dolkha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli and Okhaldhunga districts at a cost of Rs 235 million.

 The cost of the project signed with NT will be Rs. 211.6 million and the customers will get free internet service for two years in those places.
