January 19: The Development Committee of the Legislature-Parliament has directed Nepal Telecom (NT) to expand 4G  services countrywide within the next eight months. The committee on Wednesday gave directions to NT for expanding countrywide 4G services by next September.

NT obtained the 4G license from the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) on October 23, 2016 and has started the services in Kathmandu and Pokhara from January 1, 2017.

"The number of customers using 4G services has reached 41,000 so far," said Kamini Rajbhandari, Managing Director of NT to the committee. "NT is planning to expand the 4G services in other parts of the country as well. The processes related to the tender for the expansion of 4G services in 15 sub-metropolitan cities have been forwarded," she added.

The NT that has started 4G services for postpaid customers in the initial phase will be providing the services to the pre-paid customers of Kathmandu and Pokhara from February 4 on the occasion of its anniversary.

The Committee has directed the NT to expand the service in a new band or frequency, as large sections of customers are deprived from the services due to limited availability.

The Committee has also directed NTA and Ministry of Information and Communications to provide facilitation to NT for providing quality 4G service in a minimum charge possible.

The committee concludes that NT is focusing only on the numerical increase in the service seekers. The committee pointed out various problems of NT telephone services including the lack of accessibility, clarity, low-speed internet and difficulty in recharging. Therefore, it directed NT and NTA to solve these problems, address the complaints of customers in time and compensate if required within the next one month.

The committee also directed NT to forward the process of including strategic partner to increase its competitive capacity. Various discussions on implementation of previous directives given by the committee were also held in the meeting.
