January 4: The government is planning to establish Industrial Research Centre for identifying feasibilities of industrial estates in Nepal. The Ministry of Industry is forming the centre that will analyse matters including suitable industry for investment, availability of raw materials and market research.

According to the ministry, the required modality has been prepared for the research centre. As per the modality, the proposed centre will be operated with the engagement the private sector. Speaking in a regular press briefing on January 3 at the ministry, Industry Minister Nabindra Raj Joshi said that the centre will help Nepali and foreign investors to identify investment potentials in various sectors. The proposed Industrial Research Center will have information centers in all seven states and 75 districts of the country in order to facilitate large industries.

 Licenses of inactive mines to be cancelled

Joshi also informed that the ministry is in a process to improve laws related to mining. According to him, the ministry is preparing to cancel the licenses of inactive mines. "Permission will be only given to those who can optimally utilise mines,” he said, adding, "Permission should be given as per the technical abilities of the operators to operate mines." According to him, a draft of National Mineral Policy has also been prepared for the utilization of mine areas.

Special Economic Zone in seven states

The government has started preparations to construct Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in all seven states of the country. The proposed SEZs will be established in Biratnagar of Province Number One, Simara of Province Number Two, Panchkhal of Province Number Three, Gorakha of Province Number Four, Bhairawaha of Province Number Five, Jumla of Province Number Six and Dhanghadi of Province Number Seven. According to Joshi, the construction works of three SEZ has already started.  Among them, Bhairahawa SEZ has already done agreement with 21 industries and it is in the last stage to start its operation. Joshi informed that the works for Simara SEZ is also going rapidly. The government also has plans to move ahead with the construction works of Industrial Development Estates. He informed that proposal for construction of some industrial estates will be presented to the council of ministers for approval.

Political Commitment for Economic Development

Minister Joshi said that the International Investors Conference which is scheduled for March 2 and March 3 will give a positive message about the investment environment in Nepal to foreign investors. The ministry is preparing to receive commitment from political parties for economic development in order to assure the international investors regarding the security of investments in the country.
