April 29: The 13th handicraft trade fair and 11th craft competition is going to be held in Kathmandu from May 5 to May 9. The organiser Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) has expected Rs 100 million worth of turnover during the event. According to FHAN, the event is being organised to promote Nepali handicraft products. The main attractions of the fair are 11th craft competition, pavilion competition, interaction program on handicraft promotion, foreign pavilion along with different product stalls, informed the association. The stalls in the fair will have different products made from pashmina, stone, paper, bamboo, wood and wool, and others.

“The event aims to promote Nepali handicraft products in domestic and international market,” says President of Association Dharmaraj Shakya adding, “The main role of event will be to develop the business relationship between Nepali entrepreneurs and businessman, exporters and foreign importers.” Foreign exporters from China, India, Asia-Pacific countries will be participating in the fair, he said. The organisers are expecting more than 300,000 visitors.

Meanwhile, the craft competition is being organised during the fair for preservation and conservation of traditional art. The first, second, and third position will receive monetary prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively in the competition. The Association believes that the craft competition will motivate the artist recognising their talents.

“Annually more than Rs 10 billion of handicraft products was exported from Nepal. But, the export has decreased by 15 percent due to the devastating earthquake, Terai strike and Indian unofficial blockade,” said the Association. Currently, handicraft items of more than 42 categories are being exported from Nepal. According to the artist, most traditional handicrafts are yet to be recognised.
