April 14: Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata), one of the leading telecommunication groups in Asia, has formally entered Nepal. The entry of the Malaysia-based telecom company’s entry into the Nepal’s market came as the acquisition of the Nepali mobile operator Ncell. With the acquisition of Ncell, Axiata’s presence has expanded in 10 countries across Asia.

According to Axiata, it has adopted strategy to build ‘Advance Nepal’ along with South Asia region through sustainable development, connectivity and technology using its expertise. President and CEO of Axiata,  Janaludin Ibrahim says, “Axiata  has got perfect opportunity to expand its wings in emerging healthy market through the well managed number one company of Nepal. “The addition of Ncell into the Axiata network of mobile operators marks yet another significant milestone for the Group in terms of strengthening our foothold in the South Asian region.”

“One key ambition we have is to effectively offer high-speed data connectivity, and exciting products and services to meet the demands of a young and maturing Nepali market,” he opines.

He expresses his gratitude towards the concerned authorities of Nepal and Malaysia for the approval on purchase process of Ncell. “It is clear that we have contributeed to the national development wherever we provides our services,” Ibrahim mentions, adding, “We have enough experience in the area too. Based on the experience, we will collaborate with the Government of Nepal and regulatory bodies to meet the country’s desire of uplifting livelihood of all Nepalis.”

Ibrahim views that Axiata has many opportunities to develop itself along with Nepal’s long-term national development. He express commitment to play integral part in the country and Nepali’s social and economic development in collaboration with the government and civil society as Axiata is a prestigious group known for its corporate social responsibility and operational area.

Earlier, Malaysian company Axiata purchase 80 percent stake in Ncell at Rs 136.65 billion, the largest corporate takeover in Nepal so far.
