April 10: Entrepreneurs have demanded amendment in the existing Black Marketing Act. In a program organized by Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) on Friday, they claimed that the Black Marketing and some other Social Crime and Punishment Act, 2032 have failed to give validity to open market economic status of the country.

Speaking at the programme, Rajesh Kaji Shrestha, Chairman of NCC accused administration of interfering in free trade with the use of the law. “Right now, entrepreneurs are afraid as they are being harassed for various reasons,” he said. Shrestha claimed that the administration has been unnecessarily interfering in the name of market inspection even though the entrepreneurs are providing quality services to the consumers amid various difficulties. “Price of goods and services are determined by the market in free market economy, thus interference by government is against the free market policy,” he urged.

Similarly, Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal, General Secretary of NCC, said that the act has created problems as it was introduced 50 years ago and cannot understand the essence of current market trends. “The act introduced in extreme narrow and controlled time could not meet the necessities of free economic market,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Narayan Gopal Malego, clarified that the government will never discourage businesses. “Due to a few wrongdoers, the market has been flourished with frauds, but good businessmen need not be fearful. If there is any fault in the existing act, it can be amended through the consensus of stakeholders,” he said.
