May 26: The number of registered doctors in Nepal has reached 45,498 as of mid-January 2024. This is detailed in the Economic Survey of the fiscal year 2080/081 BS published by the Ministry of Finance.
The survey provides a breakdown of medical professionals in the country. There are 30,027 medical doctors and 4,883 dentists. Additionally, 10,588 specialist doctors are registered with the Nepal Medical Council. Women make up 35.9% of the total number of medical doctors.
During the same period, 122,313 nurses were registered with the Nepal Nursing Council. This includes 1,507 specialist nurses and 37,420 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM). The number of midwives registered is 66.
In terms of healthcare workforce density, Nepal has 1.2 doctors and 2.83 nurses per 1,000 population. The Economic Survey also notes that 849 foreign nurses are currently working in Nepal.
