February 5: After the expiry of the term of the Commission to Probe Usury, the Ministry of Home Affairs has tasked the police to look into the pending cases as well as new complaints regarding loan sharking.
The ministry has issued a procedure for the investigation and settlement of cases related to unfair transactions involving excessive interest rates.
Complaints regarding loan sharking and usury, which were previously sent to the district administration office by the commission, will now be sent to the district police office. Also, the police have been instructed to register new complaints.
The police will try to reconcile the cases related to usury that are currently under consideration as well as the new cases. If reconciliation cannot be done within a certain time, the police will collect necessary evidence and the take action according to Section 32 of the Civil Code of Criminal Procedure 2074. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sent the new procedure to all district administration offices and instructed them to follow it accordingly.
