SC Seeks Written Response from Government on TikTok Ban

November 22: The Supreme Court has sought written response from the government for its decision to impose a ban on TikTok, a popular social media platform, the state-owned RSS reported.
Following a preliminary hearing on a writ petitions filed against the government’s decision, the apex court on Tuesday issued a show cause order against the government, seeking a written reply within the next ten days.  RSS added that a single bench of SC Justice Binod Sharma issued the show cause order.

The apex court has asked the defendant to submit a written response by December 1, and appear for a hearing on December 5, Supreme Court joint-Spokesperson Govinda Ghimire told RSS.
A total of 10 lawyers, including senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, had filed separate writ petitions challenging the government's decision in the Supreme Court.
The government decided to ban Tiktok on November 13 citing that it has disturbed social harmony. The move has been widely criticized from all quarters with the general public likening it to an attempt to curtail freedom of expression as guaranteed by the constitution.

Many people have been using this platform to expand their business, which has been hit hard by the decision to ban TikTok.

There have been calls to regulate TikTok rather than imposing a blanket ban.
