October 7: Bajhang district witnessed two earthquakes – one measuring 5.3 in the Richter scale at 11:45 am and another measuring 4.3 in the Richter scale at 12:32 pm – on Saturday alone. Both had the epicenters in Bajhang.
With the latest jolts, the district has experienced 15 tremors in the last four days. Last Tuesday, an earthquake measuring 6.3 in the Richter scale had jolted the district, according to the Earthquake Monitoring and Researcher Centre.
Senior seismologist Bijay Prasad Koirala informed that the western belt of Nepal had stored huge force causing vulnerability to earthquake. The earthquakes recorded on Saturday are the aftershocks.
"There has been no major earthquake in the western belt of Nepal since 1505. So, it has stored tremendous force within. The release of the power created with the strike of two plates results in earthquake," he said, adding that such aftershocks would be felt for some more days.
He further warned of huge earthquake at any time in the future. However, the minor tremors could lessen such chances. -- RSS
