September 7: Due to the consumption of poisonous grass, seven cows in a single farm have died in Bharatpur, Chitwan. Out of 11 cows, seven of them have died at Shubh Narayani Cow Farm, in Bharatpur-11 due to the consumption of poisonous grass.
The farm's operator, Shiv Lamichhane, said that they noticed that the cows had become sick after eating grass since last Sunday after they had the grass. Initially, the sick cows were provided home treatment as they stopped drinking water.
Despite providing home remedies, the cows did not recover, so they had informed veterinary doctors. Even after receiving professional treatment, condition of the cows did not improve, according to him.
Lamichhane mentioned that on Sunday evening, five cows died, and on Monday evening, two more breathed their last. Symptoms such as drooling, protruding tongue, and bloating were seen in the cows before they died.
Another cow in the same has also fallen ill since Tuesday.
“I have been in keeping cow for the last 16 years, and has never seen such a problem before,”Lamichhane lamented. The death of cows has incurred Lamichanne a loss of around Rs 1 million.
Veterinary doctors and livestock experts attributed the death of cows to poisonous grass. Sushil KC the chief of the veterinary center, said, "It appears that the grass was poisoned. Besides that, we have not identified any other issues."
The post- mortem shows no other problems. The cows that consumed the poisoned grass died, while those that did not eat it survived, according to KC.
