August 6: Beni Municipality in Myagdi district has initiated a process to gather information about landlords who lease their houses and land.
This step aims to bring the landlords to taxation system. Prabha Sharma, the tax officer at the municipality, stated that they have given landlords 35 days' time to submit details of their leased properties at the respective ward offices. The deadline to submit the details is set for September 7.
To facilitate the taxation process, the municipality has categorized landlords into three groups. Those failing to submit their property details within the specified timeframe will face late fines. Sharma emphasized that starting from this fiscal year, house rent tax has been made compulsory.
This decision to categorize landlords and impose taxes comes as a response to the low number of landlords previously paying house rent tax.
Under the revised regulations, landlords renting their properties for official purposes will be charged a 10% tax, while those renting for business purposes will have to pay a 4% tax. For residential rentals, a 2% tax will be applied. This system replaces the previous flat 10% tax rate for all rental purposes.
The municipality had collected Rs 3.035 million from house rent tax in the last fiscal year.
