June 27: The police have made another arrest in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. The suspect, Ashish Budhathoki, was apprehended by the Kathmandu District Police Range from Mandikhatar in the capital city on Monday.
Superintendent of Police Sitaram Rijal confirmed that Ashish Budhathoki was one of the absconding defendants in the case. Budhathoki had allegedly been involved in the fraudulent scheme of promising Nepali citizens the opportunity to travel to the USA by creating forged documents of fake Bhutanese refugees.
According to SP Rijal, money collected by the individuals responsible for the scam were found to have been deposited in Budhathoki's bank account. As a result, he has been implicated in the case, and charges have been filed against him in the Kathmandu District Court.
The District Attorney's Office in Kathmandu has filed lawsuits against several high-profile individuals, including former ministers Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and Bal Krishna Khand, as well as former home secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, among others. They have been accused of being involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.
The case is currently being examined in relation to five different charges, which include fraud, organized crime, and treason.
