June 25: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued a warning that a heat wave may occur during the monsoon season.
Although heat waves are more commonly associated with the pre-monsoon period, the Authority stated that there is a possibility of experiencing a short duration of the heat wave during the monsoon season as well. The authority has advised the public to remain vigilant and prepared for this potential atmospheric adversity.
According to Anil Pokhrel, the Chief Executive Officer of the NDRRMA, this monsoon season is predicted to have below-average rainfall, which could result in hotter days compared to the usual conditions.
As a consequence, agricultural production is expected to decline this year. Moreover, there is a heightened risk of waterborne and communicable diseases during the monsoon season. The public is urged to exercise caution and prioritize their health.
Historically, monsoon seasons have seen the emergence of health issues such as jaundice, cholera, diarrhoea, respiratory illnesses, malaria, dengue, influenza, and flu-like illnesses. The data reveals that the country typically experiences around 500 deaths annually from cholera, kala-azar, diarrhea, and snakebites during the monsoon season.
In light of these warnings, it is essential for individuals and communities to take preventive measures, stay informed about weather updates, and prioritize their health and safety during the monsoon season. (RSS)
