Rainfall Wreaks Havoc in Eastern Nepal

June 18: With the onset of monsoon, landslides and floodings have wreaked havoc in this hills of eastern Nepal causing loss of lives and properties.

Two hydropower workers who were reported to have been swept away by the flooded Hewa River in Sankhuwasabha district have been rescued. The state-owned RSS reported that they were rescued in a severe condition.    

Tikaram Chaudhary, 24, and Deepak Raj Tharu of Bardiya Municipality-4 from Lumbini Province were among the 17 workers for the Super Hewakhola Hydropower Project who had gone missing in the flood on Saturday night, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Chief of the District Police Office, Sankhuwasabha, Narendra Godar told RSS.    

The other 15 workers are still missing.    

The two have been receiving treatment at Chainpur Community Hospital after their rescue.    

The flood triggered by incessant rainfall swept away seven houses along the river bank. As per the police, the flood has largely damaged the Super Hewa Hydropower Project based in Chainpur-4. It caused significant damages to an under-construction motorable bridge connecting Panchkhapan and Chainpur.    

A joint security squad from the Area Police Office Chainpur and the Armed Police Force is searching for the missing people.

District Police Office, Panchthar’s chief DSP Hari Khatiwada said that the swollen the river washed away four bridges: one along the Mechi Highway, one Bailey bridge along the Tamor corridor and two at Phalelung rural municipality. The flooded river also swept away an excavator belonging to the Tamor Hydropower Project from Phalelung.
