June 18: The Government of Nepal is set to receive 15 Murrah buffalo bulls from the Government of India, which will be utilized for crossbreeding purposes through artificial insemination. This initiative aims to enhance milk production in Nepal by implementing crossbreeding techniques on a significant scale of up to 100,000 buffaloes.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced that the introduction of these Murrah buffalo bulls and subsequent artificial insemination procedures will result in a substantial increase in milk production.

It is projected that within three years, after producing approximately 150,000 doses of semen from the 15 bulls, there will be notable growth in milk production across the crossbred buffaloes.

During the recent visit of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' to India, a memorandum of understanding was signed to facilitate the provision of Murrah buffalo bulls to Nepal.

The Ministry emphasizes that the acquisition of these bulls was based on discussions held between Nepal and India during the Nepal-India Joint Agriculture Group meeting in 2018.

Preparations are currently underway for Nepali experts and technicians to visit Indian farms and observe the technical aspects related to this crossbreeding program.

Once the technical details are finalized, the Murrah buffalo bulls will be made available to Nepal through customs points on the Indian side, and they will be managed in offices of the National Livestock Breeding Office located in Pokhara, Nepalgunj, and Lahan.
