April 26: The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has been rapidly growing in Nepal, with the country importing 2451 vehicles worth NPR 6.84 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year.
This represents a 66% increase in EV imports from the same period last year, as per the data available at the Department of Customs. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, Nepal imported 1,473 EVs worth NPR 4.29 billion.
Nepal sources its EVs primarily from China, India, Indonesia, South Korea, and the United States. Of these countries, India and China dominate the market share for EV imports.
Nepal imported 1,755 EVs worth NPR 4.71 billion from India and 429 EVs worth NPR 1.8 billion from China in the last nine months.
The rise in EV imports has also contributed to government revenues, with the import of 2,451 vehicles in the last nine months generating NPR 1.90 billion in revenue.
This trend is expected to continue as more consumers turn to electric vehicles as an eco-friendly and cost-effective transportation option.
