February 27: Kathmandu Metropolitan City is preparing to resume operation of a bigas plant that was closed for the last five years.
With the financial assistance of the European Union and KMC, the metropolis will repair the plant and bring back into use that is located in the premises of Department of Environment Teku.
KMC Environment Department Chief Rabinman Shrestha said that KMC was working to restore the operation of the biogas plant to manage the degradable waste sustainably by generating renewable energy from perishable waste.
For the project’s restoration, KMC is in talks with National Innovation Center Nepal. “Since the talks with NIC is positive, we shall operate the plant from the next week,” Shestha said.
European Union and KMC have injected 46 million and 18 million respectively for the plant. Installed under integrated waste management project, the biogas plant requires three metric tons of biodegradable waste in a day.
The project is able to produce 3,000 kilograms of organic fertilizer, 14 kilowatt electricity and 13,500 liters of processed water.
Preparations are underway to restore biogas plant as its closure has hit PhD students conducting research on bio energy and biogas production. Operation of the plant is expected to help the KMC manage degradable wastes.
