January 19: The government has fixed the price of sugarcane at Rs 540 per quintal. This price is Rs 20 more per quintal than last year. The cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided that the government will bear the transportation cost of Rs 70 per quintal while fixing the price of sugarcane.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development had failed to set the support price for sugarcane even though the sugarcane crushing season had started.

Due to this, the farmers were forced to sell sugarcane on credit to sugar mills at low prices.

The farmers were forced to deliver sugarcane to the sugar mills without getting proper price, fearing that the sugarcane would dry up in the fields. After the farmers sold off most of their produce, the cabinet determined the price upon the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture.

At the moment, the farmers in Terai are in a rush to sell sugarcane.

Farmer Brijmohan Pandey says that the sugarcane after the second week of November becomes juicy and the weight increases. After November, the juice dries up and the weight decreases. He said that it has become easy to sell sugarcane after the government fixed the price.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel said that problems related to the crusher industry were discussed in the meeting and a suitable decision would be reached after further study. Poudel said that each ministry has been given five days’ time to make an action plan related to each ministry for the implementation of the minimum common program of the government. Similarly, the cabinet meeting decided to transfer the Secretary of the Ministry of Energy to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and the Secretary of Physical Infrastructure Ministry to the Ministry of Energy and to appoint Prof Dr Devraj Adhikari as the chairman of the University Grants Commission.

It has been decided to give the responsibility of government spokesperson to Communications Minister Rekha Sharma. Until now, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel was in charge of the official spokesperson. Similarly, the Council of Ministers also decided that the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must be present when ministers meet foreign diplomats. The government took such a decision after it was heavily criticized for letting ministers meet foreign dignitaries alone.
