Installation of Broadband Internet Gains Momentum

October 13: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has completed broadband service installation in the designated areas of 74 districts through the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund Project.

NTA is to provide broadband service across the country through 18 different packages.

The service has come into operation in the areas after the completion of the installation work.

NTA Spokesperson Santosh Poudel said monitoring and testing of 10 projects have been completed so far. Monitoring and testing under the third phase of eight projects has yet to be undertaken.

Likewise, Poudel informed that the process of installing broadband service has been put forward in the eight districts that were most affected by the 2015 earthquakes including Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dolakha, Sindhuli, Ramechhap and Okhaldhunga by mobilizing the same fund. In this connection, the NTA has signed separate memorandum of understanding with 73 out of a total of 76 municipalities and rural municipalities.

NTA has come up with a plan to install at least 20-MBPS capacity broadband internet service in 4,251 areas including offices of all local governments, ward offices, community secondary schools, community health facilities and all primary schools to enhance their institutional capacity. -- RSS
