August 21: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) exported electricity worth around Rs 2 billion to neighbouring India in the first month of the current fiscal year (FY 2022/23) beginning from July 17, 2022.
The NEA, the state-owned producer and distributor of electricity in Nepal, traded surplus power of over 242 million units worth Rs 1.83 billion to India where power demand in monsoon is higher, NEA said. Currently, NEA is effortful to export additional 111 megawatts of electricity.
While it earned a total Rs 16.1 billion in profits from the sale of electricity in the previous fiscal year, 2021/22, the average profit from power export stood at Rs 59 million a day in the first month of the current fiscal year or the Nepali month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August).
The NEA started trading surplus energy from monsoon on the Day-Ahead Market of the Indian Energy Exchange Limited (IEX) since June 2, 2022.
In the first phase, 39 megawatts of electricity generated from two power houses was traded with the IEX. Thereafter, 364 megawatts of electricity generated by six different power houses in the country was traded since June 10, 2022 on a daily basis at competitive rates.
Power exports took place through the 400 kV Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line. In the previous FY, the NEA exported power worth Rs 3.8 billion. -- RSS
