March 22: The Government of Nepal has reached an understanding with Qatar to renew the bilateral labour agreement between the two nations.
According to government sources, the two countries agreed to renew the labour pact following a meeting held between Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Krishna Kumar Shrestha, and Labour Minister of Qatar, Dr Ali bin Samikh Al Marri during Minister Shrestha’s ongoing visit to Qatar.
Minister Shrestha briefed his Qatari counterpart about the draft sent by the Government of Nepal for the renewal of labour agreement between Nepal and Qatar. According to Minister Shrestha's Secretariat, both sides agreed to finalize the draft soon by holding discussions over it. Once the draft is finalized, the two countries agreed to organize a ceremony to sign the agreement in Nepal. The two countries had initially signed the agreement in 2005 in a bid to make labour migration safe and regular.
During the ongoing visit of the Nepali delegation, both the ministers held discussions on implementation of decisions made by the fourth meeting of Nepal-Qatar Joint Committee organised in Kathmandu in December, 2021. Nepal and Qatar had agreed to revise the labour agreement back then.
Various issues including social security of Nepali workers, safety at workplace, health facility and arrangement of 24-hour insurance were also discussed, the state-owned national news agency of Nepal (RSS) reported.

According to the RSS, there are more than 300,000 Nepali workers in Qatar.
Similarly, Qatari Minister Marri expressed his interest to recruit Nepali workers in the FIFA World Cup to be held later in 2022 in Qatar.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Ek Narayn Aryal, Joint-Secretary Rajeev Pokharel, Under-Secretary Dr Thaneshwar Bhusal, officials of the Nepali Embassy in Qatar and Secretary of the Labour Ministry of Qatar, Mohammed Hassan Al Obaidli.
